This week we have explored the question “What do plants need to grow?”. We started the week listening attentively to ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Our learning activities have included; ordering the life cycle of a bean, making a book cover with our name and a beanstalk illustration, building a castle, making a leaf to add to our class beanstalk, writing instructions on ‘How to plant a seed?’ and in our funky finger area we have had a track game where we had to build a beanstalk! On Tuesday, we learnt that plants need soil, water, air and light to grow and we have all planted our own bean seed which are excited to watch grow and we have been observing throughout the week to see if we can see any shoots! We have started to learn “The Planting Song” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a44NFSiIn54) and we have been learning Makaton signs to go with it too! Our Talk through Stories this week was ‘The Bear and The Piano’. We were able to identify the characters and the problem, we have learnt about the meanings of new words and we have taken on the role of the ‘Bear’ and carried out freeze-frames to show how we feel in different scenarios! In Literacy, our Year 1 children have written questions that they wanted to know about their job, they have them presented these to their peers and we have asked Google their questions to find out the answer! In Maths, Reception children have subitised numbers to 5, arranged 6 or 8 objects into groups that can be subitised, shown numbers from 5 to 10 in ‘5 and a bit’ arrangements, counted 20 objects, practised saying the ‘tricky’ teen numbers and practised counting to 100. We have also discussed strategies for counting larger amounts that can’t be moved. Year 1 children have learnt to; explain what happens when 2 is added to or subtracted from odd and even numbers, explain what the difference is between consecutive odd and even numbers and explained what happens when zero is added to or subtracted from a number. In Science, we have looked at the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amount of different types of foods and hygiene. We know that exercise makes our muscles stronger, makes us flexible and improves our circulation. We know that there are 5 food groups and that each food group has an important job. We can name basic hygiene rules that prevent the spread of germs – we know that germs are super small living things that make us poorly!
In PSHE, our enquiry question has been “Why do we like and dislike different things?”. We know that other people have different likes, dislikes and opinions from ourselves and that it is okay but we know that it is still important to listen to the opinions of others.
