For our baking activity today, we decorated butterfly biscuits. Firstly we learnt to mix icing sugar and water to make the icing and then we used a spoon to carefully pour and spread it onto our biscuit. Then we had a challenge to use our pincer grip to carefully pick up the toppings and add them to the biscuit. Our challenge was to try and arrange them so they were symmetrical and some of us managed this all by ourselves!

On Monday, we had a delivery of 5 live caterpillars which we are hoping to look after and watch them grow into butterflies! We looked very carefully at them and noticed that they were very tiny and very still! During the week, we have kept watching them and we cannot believe how much they have grown already! We have also noticed that they are eating the food in the bottom of the pot and are now doing lots of moving around too! We are looking forward to checking on their progress after the weekend.
We have had some fabulous outdoor learning so far this week with lots of wonderful playing together. It is lovely to see the children renew their friendships after the Easter break and also make new ones and there has been so much progress in how they play together with each other.
The children have loved: playing in the wet and dry sand, exploring our small world, mark making, water play, climbing and balancing, finding worms and ladybirds, building and role playing. Here are some photos of them in action: In nursery, we are working hard to develop our independence and we have been encouraging the children to put on and fasten their own coats, This morning these children all managed to put on and zip up their coats all by themselves! What superstars!!
Today we have been learning about the butterfly's wings. We looked at some different pictures and used the words: colourful, bright, beautiful and patterns to describe them. Then we noticed that the wings had the same pattern on both sides and we learnt the word "symmetrical" to describe this. In the creative area, we all had a go at printing our own butterfly. The children learnt to paint their own colourful pattern on one wing and then carefully fold it down. When they opened it out, they noticed that the wings were symmetrical!
To link in with this week's learning about the life cycle of the butterfly, our book of the week is "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. Today we have read the story together and also watched a Makaton signed version on our interactive whiteboard so we can learn to say and sign the words. We have been saying and signing caterpillar and butterfly and have also clapped out the syllables to support our speech development. Our provision activities so far this week include: -moulding and shaping our play dough to create butterflies -exploring our minibeast small world area -working together to complete some tricky jigsaws of the life cycle -exploring shape butterflies in our water area -developing our fine motor skills by using tweezers to pick up and sort different shaped pasta which represents the different parts of the life cycle. -reading lots of stories and information books about caterpillars, butterflies and other minibeasts The nursery team are really looking forward to welcoming our Shooting Stars back tomorrow for the beginning of the Summer term in nursery. We are also welcoming a few new children to our team and hope they settle in quickly and make lots of new friends.
Our theme for learning is "Watch if Grow" and we are beginning this week by learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. We are expecting an exciting delivery of some live caterpillars to help us learn and we will be watching them grow into beautiful butterflies over the coming weeks. |
