As well as all our other Children in Need activities, we decided to bake some Pudsey bear biscuits. There was so much learning involved! A group of children weighed and mixed all the ingredients and then everyone had a turn at rolling the dough and cutting out their own biscuits. This afternoon we decorated them using different coloured icing and sprinkles. They looked delicious- you did a great job, Shooting Stars!

Congratulations to our winner of the decorate a poppy competition. Mrs Fitchett thought your sparkly decorated poppy was wonderful!
At lunch time today we got out our balance bikes and the children had lots of fun! We talked about the need to wear helmets when riding so they were safe. The children negotiated space and controlled their bikes around or track too.
Today we have helped to raise money for a very important cause- Children in Need. The children were invited to wear non-uniform and donate £1 towards the charity. In nursery we spoke about how important it is to help people and how we are helping children today.
Our activities have included sticking spots onto Pudsey bear outlines, colouring Pudsey by matching the numbers to the colours, drawing spots on large paper, catching and counting coloured spots in our water tray and using tweezers to put spots (pompoms) onto Pudsey, All our activities had a big focus of developing our fine motor skills. We have been learning to use scissors to cut and snip this week. We have learnt how to hold the scissors correctly with our fingers and thumb and how to snip around the paper. Some children were able to make snips and some children were even able to cut right through the paper and cut out a shape! We will keep practising so we get even more confident.
In our investigation tray this week we have been exploring shaving foam. The children loved the texture and the smell as well so it was a great sensory experience. Our focus was to make different marks in the foam with our fingers. We tried different patterns including circles, lines, zig-zags and spirals.
We have learnt a new Maths song this week- One Elephant out to Play. This is a one more song so we began with one elephant and added one more each time we sang the song. The children showed how many elephants on their fingers and counted how many altogether. There was so much Maths in this activity. Here are a few photos of our group time: In our Maths area, we have had some coloured elephants to explore with numbered spiders webs from our song. The children have enjoyed sorting, counting and matching the elephants on their own and with their friends. Such a lot of learning and talk!
Our book of the week is Elmer by David Mckee. This story is about an elephant who is different to all the others as he is patchwork! We spoke about what colour elephants are usually and compared them to Elmer. Some children learnt the word "grey" and they all learnt the word "patchwork." We also used the words colourful, bright and "like a rainbow" to describe Elmer. Our discussions related this to the theme of anti-bullying week as we learnt that it is okay to be different and we are all still friends. Some of our provision activities this week include: Working together to build a jungle home for Elmer and his wild animal friends. The children used our wooden blocks to build different enclosures and then added grass, mud, trees etc using our natural resource. They used their imaginations to make up stories using our small world jungle animals. Creating our own colourful patterned elephants by sticking different materials to an elephant outline in the creative area. Using our mark making skills to add colourful patterns to an elephant. We have been learning to hold our pen or pencil in a tripod grip and control it to make different marks, shapes and patterns. Using cutters to create wild animals in the playdough area. We used our fine motor skills to carefully roll the dough and then press the cutter into the dough to make the animal shape. Using popoids to build different animals in the construction area, We used our fine motor skills and strength to push the parts together and were creative in making each one unique. Exploring how to mix grey in our painting area so we could paint elephants.
Today the children were invited to wear odd socks to make the start of Anti-bullying week in school. At carpet time, we looked at everyone's socks and identified if they were odd or not as well as noticing all the different patterns and colours. We spoke about other differences such as hair colour and eye colour and the children learnt the word "difference" in this context. We spoke about how everyone is different and special and that is okay!
At story time, we read the story of Simon Sock and spoke about the different patterns and socks and were pleased that Simon found a friend in the end- they didn't look the same but they liked the same things and so they loved playing together. This morning, the Shooting Stars loved creating their own firework dance with ribbons. First, we practised lots of moves with our ribbons- circles, up and down, across our bodies, swirls and spinning. Then we curled up small and blasted off to move like fireworks in the night sky. We danced to Katy Perry's Firework and there were some brilliant moves. This activity was perfect for developing the children's gross motor skills as they moved in lots of different ways to the music.
