Today for snack Rainbows were offered prawn crackers and sweet chilli dip to celebrate Chinese New Year! It can be quite tricky to try new food and staff were so proud that everyone tried some! Here they are enjoying their delicious snack! Some rainbows even had seconds, thirds and fourths!

Rainbows have demonstrated amazing team work this week and created an ENORMOUS Chinese Dragon to celebrate new year! They began by decorating a large piece of fabric with Red and Yellow paint, feathers and glitter. They then decorated the head by painting it red first, then adding teeth to the mouth, ears, eyes and decorated it with yellow stars and gold ribbon. The designs were all the children's ideas and we think it looks wonderful!
They paraded it around school and all the children thought it was AMAZING! Well done Rainbows, what a truly magnificent dragon! Today was Bedtime Story Day, and although it snowed and we missed out on some of our activities because we went home, we still had a lot of fun!
We all wore our PJs and brought our teddy bear to school. We had the opportunity to share our favourite books, which some of us brought, with our friends and their teddy. We had some special visitors come and read their favourite story to us. Miss McGinnes read Tiddler and Miss Groves read Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell. Miss Clementson read another of her favourite books by Sue Hendra and Miss Hodgson also read one of her favourite stories. The Rainbows relaxed in front of the fire and had a hot chocolate while they listened to Miss McGinnes read. Mr Holmes, Miss Overton and Mrs Lawson were due to come and share their favourite story with us, but as the day was cut short we will have to reschedule. They have promised they will read to us! In Literacy we looked at some objects and wondered what they were (photo below). The Rainbows had some good ideas and thought the box could be a car. They knew the food was for a picnic but were perplexed at what the colander could be for. It all made sense when we read the story Whatever Next. They were for Ted's trip to space in his rocket. After a discussion the Rainbows decided they would like to go on an adventure to America. They made a list of things that they would need to take with them and how they would travel there. They decided they would travel by boat and the list reflected all the things they would need to pack to get there; food and drink, sleeping bag, clothes, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, iPad and games. Here is one of our Rainbows that we celebrated achieving their 100 Super Star Books Reading Award! Congratulations!
The Rainbows had so much fun reading Supertato together this week for Talk Through Stories. They love reading Sue Hendra books, possibly due to Miss Clementson often reading her favourite story "Barry the Fish with Fingers." We have several of her books in our reading area that the children access independently and enjoy reading with their friends.
Our focus was on learning new vocabulary which included shrieked, leapt, escaped, gasped, rescue, distressed, vanished and crept. The Rainbows talked about the problem in the story (the evil pea escaped from the freezer and wreaked havoc) and identified the characters and the main characters from the story. The Rainbows took part in freeze frames to show Supertato's emotions as he fell into the icy depths of the freezer, found carrot stuck to the conveyor belt and when he trapped evil pea in the jelly. Rainbows joined in with key phrases from the story using MTYT (My turn your turn) and identified correct and incorrect sentences about the story. Here at Park Street we strive to create a positive environment within classes and the Rainbows begin the day saying positive things about themselves.
It is sometimes difficult to say what we are good at, and to name the good qualities that we have, and we believe this is something that every child should be able to do to develop their self worth, self confidence and believe how wonderful and special they are. It is so important they see these qualities and believe what they can offer to others. We begin the day by saying a positive phrase about ourselves, such as "we are kind" or "we are amazing" and this really does make a difference. The Rainbows have enjoyed learning about The Frog Prince and Cinderella this week as part of our Magical Storyland topic. They have been learning some of the features of castles and have been using their painting and mixing skills to paint some lovely pictures for our display. They have taken part in some really great teamwork to build a castle in the construction area using photos of real castles to add some features. They have practised their Fred Talk skills to help fix Cinderella's castle walls by ordering sounds in words to complete them. They have also been very creative and created slippers to wear for Cinderella's ball. This involved the Rainbows drawing around their shoe, cutting out the shape, creating a top part and attaching it securely and then decorating their slipper. There some wonderful creations!
Here are some photos of us working hard this week! We had our very own shoe shop this week! Cinderella needed a new pair of shoes so we opened our very own shop. We have been measuring our feet to find the size, tried on shoes to see which fit us and used the vocabulary large, small, big, bigger, smaller, larger, used coins to pay for our shoes, had a shoe cleaning service and have been very polite shop keepers and customers! The Rainbows tried so hard to practise tying tie shoe laces and fasten their buckles too.
Here we are in action! The Rainbows are beginning to look at changes over time and began this week by discussing what might happen if we leave a piece of bread for a couple of weeks.
There was a very interesting discussion and some of their ideas were; "It will go hard" "It will go out of date" "It will go all green and mouldy and all hard and rip" "It might go all dirty and it might form germs". We sealed the bread, and also an orange and carrot in separate bags and will leave them for a couple of weeks and observe any changes that happen. We added some magnifying glasses to observe any smaller changes. Watch this space for any updates! Today was NSPCC Number Day, thank you for your donations towards the charity.
The Rainbows had so much fun taking part in lots of maths activities. These included team games and involved taking turns and listening carefully to rules. The Rainbows had to subitise, recognise numerals, add numbers together, order numbers and count very carefully. They completed jigsaws and puzzles too! Everyone wrote down their favourite number and explained why it was their favourite. Some reasons were because it is their age, it is the number on their door, it is an even number, it has two or three digits and it is their favourite number block. All the staff dressed as a different number block and it was lovely to see children dressing up with numbers on their clothes and showing their friends the numbers. Here we are having lots of fun! |
