Our theme this week was the ‘Arctic’. We were able to remember that the Arctic is a continent and Team EO impressed me with how they could name the other 6 continents! We started the week discovering what it was like in the Arctic and we learnt the names of different Arctic animals such as; Polar Bear, Arctic Hare, Arctic Fox, Snowy Owl, Reindeer, Seal, Walrus and Husky. We also learnt different facts about these animals which we had to remember for a ‘What animal am I?’ quiz later in the week! We have been exploring using watercolour paints to paint Arctic landscapes – we learnt that we don’t need too much water though as it makes our paper go all soggy! Some of us began to used the ideas and techniques from our new junk modelling books to help us better our creations. We also enjoyed looking at our class picture of us in our World Book Day costumes - we were able to spot ourselves and friends and we had lovely discussions about the books the characters were from! In Literacy, Year 1 children worked hard to order sequencing cards of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, the children then used these to help them retell the story as their assessed piece of writing. In Maths, Reception children have continued to focus on composition, this week we have focused on identifying when 2 sets are equal and have used dice and fingers to explore the idea of ‘2 equal parts’ and combining them together to get the whole. We have spoke about doubles and used the stem sentences “___ is made of ___ and ___; ___ and ___ make ___.”. We are developing our confidence in recalling doubles facts. Year 1 children have completed some assessment questions as part of assessment week before moving onto explaining that the = sign can be used to show that the whole and the sum of the parts are equal and adding parts to find the value of the whole and writing the equation. In Science, we have begun work on this half-terms inquiry focus ‘observing change over time’. Team EO are going to observe how a cut apple changes over the course of a week. We made predictions with our talk partners and we think that it may go squishy and change colour!

Team EO were very excited to see it begin to snow this afternoon. We spent some time looking at the map of England and the weather forecast! We were able to recognise the United Kingdom and England and we looked at towns and cities on the map that were close to where we are in Wombwell!
We went out into our outdoor area and spent time exploring in the snow. We used brushes to mark make in the snow that had settled on one our mats but it soon melted so we moved on to mark making on the tables. Some of us made snowballs by sculpting the snow by pressing and moulding it together and practised our throwing skills by carefully throwing them onto the grass away from others. We explored our footprints and watched as we caught it on our clothes and in our hair! We had lots of fun! In EYFS we have had a competition to decorate a potato as a book character. Each child was sent home with a potato and they had to choose their favourite book, discuss the characters, choose their favourite character from the book and describe what they look like, and finally dress their potato including as much decoration as possible!
We had an amazing response in Team EO and it was clear to see that the children and their families had worked really hard together! Thank you for all your fantastic efforts! We started the week listening to the story ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell – we recapped about that an author is the person who wrote the book. We explored lots of different wild animals and talked about why these animals wouldn’t make good pets! We have written our own ‘Dear Zoo’ book! Each child worked hard to use there Fred Fingers to write the name of the animal they had chosen and what was wrong with it! Our funky finger activity was to colour in the spiral snake before using our carefully cutting skills to cut along the dashed lines! We have been turn-taking and practising our counting skills in our ‘Visit the Zoo’ board game. All Reception children have played a caterpillar track game with Miss Overton focusing on comparison. In Literacy, Year 1’s have practised joining sentences together using the conjunction ‘and’. We have been practising saying the days of the week in order, learning to read the days of the week and trying hard to spell them independently! We have been practising using the suffix ‘ed’ in our sentences before we complete our assessed write next week! In Maths, Reception have continued to focus on composition of number, particularly Number 7. Children used 2 different coloured multi-link cubes to make the number 7 and we discussed how many of each colour they had used. We have used our fingers to describe 7 as ‘5 and 2 more’ and we have begun to explain our understanding of the composition of 7. Can your child remember the different numbers 7 can be composed from? Year 1’s started the week systematically partitioning the numbers 6-10. We have solved missing part problems in the range from six to ten using part-whole models and we have used the + symbol to write expressions – we have learnt about the commutative law! In History, we begun to explore the significant individual William the Conqueror and the significant event in national linked to him. We wrote questions about what we would like to find out. In Computing, Year 1’s have worked in groups to combine ‘forwards’ and ‘backwards’ commands to make a sequence to programme the Bee-bots. They had to think carefully about which buttons to press on the Bee-bots and we had to remember to press 'clear' after it had completed our command before inputting another command. We hd lots of fun
Wow! What a fantastic day we have had celebrating World Book Day! Children were invited to come to school dressed as a book character and to bring their favourite book with them! Team EO staff absolutely loved seeing the children's amazing costumes. At circle time we shared who we had come to school dressed as and we told our friends a little bit about our character! Here are some of our comments: J "I'm Zog and he breathes fire out". G "I'm Venom and he's Spiderman's enemy". J "I'm Harry Potter and he casts spells". O "I'm the Cat in the Hat and he does tricks". H "I came as Black Panther and he fights monsters". E "I'm Elsa and she's magical". Children had lots of fun engaging in World Book Day activities in provision such as making bookmarks and completing book scavenger hunts. Some children to choose to draw a picture of themselves in their costume and they have used their Fred Fingers to write who they dressed up with and why they chose that character! We were super proud to show off our work! Reading Buddies!
This morning we were very lucky to have the children from Team DB come and join us in Team EO and they read us lots of books - some that we had brought in from home and some from our class reading area! A massive thank you to Team DB for coming and reading to us. |
