Reception children have continued to work in RWI groups to learn sounds. Children have continued to learn to say pure sounds, write the sound saying the handwriting phrase and to blend sounds in words to hear a word using ‘Fred Talk’. Some Reception children have begun to use magnetic boards to learn to blend – once children are secure in this they will begin to read green word cards. Our number of the week has been number 3! The children have been identifying the numeral, writing the numeral and learning different ways to represent the number 3. They practised counting objects out to 3. Children could identify a triangle and learnt that a triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners.

This week our learning has been focussed around “My Family”. Our book of the week has been “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. The children have enjoyed using puppets of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to retell the story alongside props such small, medium-sized and big spoons and bowls. The children have been trying to carefully draw pictures of their families and have then been exploring mixing the powder paints to mix the colours that they need! Children have had the opportunity to draw a person who is special about them and write why they are special.
Our Y1's had their first visit of the year to the computer suite! The children were very patient and worked very hard.
The children practised logging on to Purple Mash - which was a bit tricky but they persevered! They then created their own avatar and finally, the children created a picture and gave it a name! In Science, we are learning about 'Seasonal Changes'. This afternoon we learnt all about Autumn. We discussed what the weather was like (getting colder) and discovered that the days get shorter. We spoke about what happens to the leaves on the trees and what animals do in Autumn - hibernate and migrate. We learnt that Autumn is in the months of September, October and November.
We then went on Welly Walk to our Nature Area where we worked in pairs to spot Autumnal changes. Our enquiry question this half-term was based on pattern seeking. Our big question was "Do the tallest trees lose their leaves first in Autumn?". The children in their pairs observed what size trees the leaves had fallen from and we came to the conclusion that there is a pattern to the size of the tree and the tree losing its leaves first in Autumn. We found that on the tallest trees the branches underneath at the top were bare or had brown leaves on and those trees and branches closest to the ground still had green leaves. Year 1 children have accessed their appropriate RWI groups with children from across KS1. In Literacy we have continued practising our letter formation ensuring we start and finish in the correct place! We have also been using our ‘Fred Fingers’ to write simple words, some of us have wrote captions. We are working on writing dictated captions/sentences. In maths, we have used lots of concrete and pictorial resources to make groups of 10. We have used the vocab ‘ones’ and ‘tens’. We have identified how many groups of ten and how many ‘extra’ ones and recorded this on a place value chart.

The children have been identifying the numeral, writing the numeral and learning different ways to represent the number 2. We have sorted a variety of objects that show one and not one and counted one object out from a larger group.
WeOur book of the week has been “Rainbow Fish” and we have also enjoyed listening to the story “What the Ladybird Heard”. After reading “What the Ladybird Heard” which is a story about listening to our friends, we had a circle time where the children shared what they thought made a good friend. Our activities this week have included printing with celery in the painting area to add scales to create a rainbow fish, drawing a picture of ourselves to add to our friendship trees, playing turn-taking games, practising our letter formations for sounds taught and using our funky fingers to make friendship bracelets!
Year 1 children have been accessing phonics groups relevant to where they are in the RWI programme.
In Literacy, the children have been working hard to ensure they are forming letter correctly, starting and finishing in the right place as we know how important this is to be successful in our writing. Children have also practised writing simple CVC words with these sounds in using their Fred Fingers. We will continue with this work next week! In Maths, the children have been practising counting forwards and backwards to 100. The children have used various mathematical resources to support them with this such as 100-square, bead string and Gattengo charts. They have begun to use mathematical language such as tens and ones when counting for example "three tens and sevens one, three tens and eight ones". The children have collaboratively completed their pre-unit assessments for Science and Geography! This week the children have been taught the first 5 RWI (Read Write Inc.) sounds in their phonics groups. The sounds are 'm', 'a', 's', 'd' and 't'. Children have continued to practise their oral blending using Fred Talk.
In Maths, children have started work on having a deep understanding of numbers to 10. This week the children have learnt all about number 1 including lots of ways to represent one using different mathematical resources such as five-frame, ten-frame, dice, domino, tally marks and number line! |
