Today, Team CH have thought about the word ‘celebration’. What is a celebration? We decided on a few times that are special to us, times like; Christmas, Weddings, New Year, Christenings and Birthdays. We then introduced Eid as a very special celebration for Muslims. We watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OF4HEGNBRQ and talked about Eid being a celebration that occurs at the end of Ramadan. It is a joyful festival. It is a day of thanksgiving to Allah and also celebrates the fact that Muslims have completed the fourth pillar of Islam (sawm). Finally we made some cards to celebrate Eid!

We received an email recently from Park Side Care Home. We were informed that a lady called Joan would be turning 102 over the weekend and that due to a Covid lockdown she would be unable to have any visitors on her special day. The staff asked if we could cheer her up by making her some brithday cards. The children of Park Street rose to the challenge brilliantly. Mrs Longden dropped off around 145 brithday cards just for Joan. I think Joan's smile below says it all. MANY HAPPY RETURNS JOAN!
Team CH have been thinking about how they have special places. Places like, school, the park, the swimming pool, pizza hut and home. We understand that everyone has a special place and we can name a Mosque as a special place to Muslims, followers of Islam. We thought hard and long about the rules we have in our special places and then explored some rules of a Mosque. Rules like, removing shoes when entering to help keep the Musallah clean and performing the wudhu to clean all the badness from you and how men and women go to different parts of the Mosque, but when Muslims pray they all face the Ka'ba. In all Mosques there is a Mirhab and this let's Muslims know which way to face when praying. As you will know, celebrating key religious and cultural days and events is crucial to us at Park Street as we believe it opens our children’s eyes to the importance of diversity and encourages our children to know more and understand other people’s thoughts, feelings and beliefs. In school we have been celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year in different ways. The children always love to find out about different people and how they celebrate their beliefs. The children have enjoyed an incredible day of celebrations! Today the Reception children were really lucky to have a visit from Reverend John Armstrong and the Lay Minister Stephanie Peake from St Mary's Church in Wombwell.
Many of the children had never met a vicar before and were interested to learn about his role in church. He began by explaining what can happen at church, which includes baptisms, weddings, funerals and Sunday services. He told us about other things that happen at church including a food bank and special groups for children. Stephanie then explained her role and said that she looked after children at church including toddler groups and after school groups. Stephanie also said she is a Lay Reader to help run church services. Both told us that people who attend church services believe that God loves us and wants to be part of our lives. They showed us what they wear for services including a cassock, surplice and prayer scarf. Stephanie also showed us what she wears for her children's groups and read the words on the back and told us what they meant; "engaging, nurturing, disciplining." The children were keen to ask lots of questions including "Why do you wear special clothes?" "What do you do at church?" "What food do you eat at church?" and "Is Jesus real?" These opened up very interesting discussions from our visitors, and the children are looking forward to them returning in a few weeks to learn more! |
