Christianity in our community!

​Today the Reception children were really lucky to have a visit from Reverend John Armstrong and the Lay Minister Stephanie Peake from St Mary's Church in Wombwell.

Many of the children had never met a vicar before and were interested to learn about his role in church.

He began by explaining what can happen at church, which includes baptisms, weddings, funerals and Sunday services. He told us about other things that happen at church including a food bank and special groups for children. Stephanie then explained her role and said that she looked after children at church including toddler groups and after school groups. Stephanie also said she is a Lay Reader to help run church services.

Both told us that people who attend church services believe that God loves us and wants to be part of our lives. They showed us what they wear for services including a cassock, surplice and prayer scarf. Stephanie also showed us what she wears for her children's groups and read the words on the back and told us what they meant; "engaging, nurturing, disciplining."

The children were keen to ask lots of questions including "Why do you wear special clothes?" "What do you do at church?" "What food do you eat at church?" and "Is Jesus real?"

These opened up very interesting discussions from our visitors, and the children are looking forward to them returning in a few weeks to learn more!
