This week we have been learning about what it is like in space. We started the week listening to the story “Whatever Next!” by Jill Murphy and have enjoyed listening to “Space Shuttle Blasts Off!” and the non-fiction book “My first book of space” which we chose on our library visit last Friday!
We have learnt about our solar system and the names of the 8 planets in it. We now know that the sun is the largest star at the centre of our solar system. We have tried really hard to learn the order of the planets in the solar system, starting nearest the sun to those furthest away. We know that the moon is made of rock not cheese! We have had lots of wonderful junk modelled rockets made – we have worked hard to ensure that our models had all the features of a rocket! We have used their careful cutting skills to cut out the parts of an astronaut and have used split pins to join the parts together. We have used black card and chalks to produce some amazing pictures of our solar system and we have even labelled the planets! We have enjoyed working together to complete a space jigsaw puzzle and we have had the opportunity to write a list of objects we would take into space and to write letters telling our important people that we are in space and what we can see. We have been using the 2D shapes to create shape rockets and have been drawing around them to produce our own pictures!
