Today the Eco Reps from KS1 and Year 2/3 took part in a litter pick in our nature area. Over the past few weeks, our nature area has changed significantly with the Autumn weather and most of the litter has been covered with leaves. Nonetheless, the Eco Reps were keen to search and were amazed at how much litter was found! The majority of the litter was sweet wrappers and crisp packets although they were saddened to see that some of the litter had come from adults in school such as plastic from storage boxes and laminated work! The Eco Reps worked tirelessly to pick up as much litter as they could find and were pleased with the four big bags of rubbish collected! They even asked if they could come again to help keep our school environment tidy! Look at how well they did!

Another year has begun, and each class in KS1 and KS2 has chosen two new Eco Reps! Thank you for putting your name forward and I know you will be fabulous at your new job! Being an Eco Rep is very important as it helps keep our community, and in turn our planet, a happy, clean and lovely place to live! Over the year there will be lots of exciting activities where you can make a difference to our school and local area. Watch this space for more information and keep up with all the activities the Eco Reps have been doing! Park Street loves to celebrate individual achievements and we would love to share with you one of our “Rainbows” special mission! Rae is a fantastic member of Team CW and her mission is to make our world a lovely place to be by getting rid of all the litter! Rae cares deeply about the environment and has been inspired to buy her own litter pick and go with her family at weekends to rid the world of litter! Rae says “It’s helping the Earth so animals don’t get tangled in the rubbish. I enjoy doing it because it helps. I hope people will see me doing it and put their rubbish in the bin.” What a truly amazing act that not only makes our community a beautiful place to be, but also makes it safe for wildlife too! Keep making a difference Rae, you are a SUPERSTAR! Now school life is getting back to normal after class bubbles, the Eco Reps have been getting into the swing of things caring for our local community! The Eco Reps were lucky to be joined by local community group “Twiggs” who accompanied us on a litter pick on Park Street and surrounding area. We were completely astounded by the amount of litter we collected from such a small area, approximately 8 large bin bags! Not only were we shocked about the amount but also the types of rubbish people disposed of in the street and where they threw it! We found bottles, cans and wrappers stuffed behind the bus stop and Christmas wrapping paper amongst other Christmas rubbish in the salt bin in our local housing estate! The Eco Reps really felt they made such a difference to our community and have asked to complete another litter pick next half term as there was so much more rubbish we didn’t get time to collect. They are also wondering if the places we cleared litter from will still be litter free, so our fingers are crossed they are! They all represented Park Street wonderfully and the Twiggs team were proud of their achievements too! We would like to give a special mention to Mrs Chavan, one of our school governors, who accompanied us on our litter pick! THANK YOU! Two children are chosen from each class from Reception to Year 6 and are voted for by their peers. The role of the Eco Reps is to make our school green! There are many ways that we can do this and we have already taken part in some fun activities this year including;
- "The Great British Spring Clean" where the Tidy Team accompanied us on a litter pick on Park Street to make the area clean and safe. - We have been on a litter pick within our school grounds and focused on cleaning our nature area. We were amazed at the amount of rubbish we collected! - "The Big Schools Birdwatch". We made bird feeders using lard and bird seed. We hung them from the trees in our nature area to feed the birds during winter time when food is scarce. We also took part in the birdwatch and recorded and sent off the results. We saw some Wood Pigeons, a Blue Tit and Blackbirds. We had some more fun activities planned for this year to help learn about birds as the birdwatch really inspired us to learn more! We were due to have a visit from a bird sanctuary. They were going to bring some owls and birds of prey for us to learn about so hopefully this can be rearranged. We were also due a visit from the "Bug Man" who was going to teach us about caring for the environment and how to attract bugs to boost the ecosystem within school. Our overall aim is to educate others in school and to understand how we can all make small changes that will impact locally and globally. We meet every few weeks to discuss important issues and take part in activities. |
