We have carried out a Science experiment in nursery this morning. Firstly we arranged skittles in a circle on a plate and then poured warm water into the centre of it to see what would happen. The children talked about what they thought would happen and some of the ideas were "the colours will go" "it will make a rainbow" and "we will see colours."
The children were fascinated to watch as the colours started to run into the centre. Some of the comments included: "it's like a rainbow" "wow look at all the colours go" and "I think it's like a unicorn." We are going to have a go at some different experiments over the next few days.

We have been exploring cornflour gloop in our sensory tray today. We mixed cornflour and water together and then used our hands to explore the mixture. Some of the children loved the feel of it on their fingers and became absorbed for a long time! They were fascinated by they way they could roll it and it was hard but then it was running through their fingers.
Throughout this activity the children spontaneously used the words: sticky, slimy, wet, gooey, like glue, soft, runny and dripping. The Shooting Stars thoroughly enjoyed wearing non-uniform and raising money for Comic Relief today. We spoke about raising money to help people who are not as lucky as we are and the children were keen to help!
During the day, we had a go at lots of different activities. We sang a red nose day song and we also told some jokes which supported our speaking and listening skills. Miss McGinnes told the children about Gethin Jones who had a challenge to dance for 24 hours and we used the word "endurance" to describe the challenge. Then we had a go at our own dance challenge- we didn't manage 24 hours but we did keep going for 2o minutes and the children realised how tired they would be after dancing all day!! Then we went on our welly walk in the nature reserve and we spotted red noses hidden in the trees. Each red nose had a different facial expression on it and we had a challenge to try and find them all and tick them off on our sheet. We worked in two teams and helped each other to find them. We also spoke about the expression on each face and related this to different feelings including happy, sad, excited, scared, shocked and tired. Thank you to everyone for your support in aid of this very worthwhile charity. We love poetry in nursery and we have been learning to recite some poems over the last few weeks. This is great for developing our communication and language skills as well as building our confidence to perform. Click the videos below to see us in action! For our baking activity this week, we decided to make heart shaped biscuits to give to our Mums for Mother's day. The children followed a recipe to make the biscuit dough and then used their motor skills to carefully roll the dough and cut out the heart shapes. We hope they taste good!
This week, our "Amazing Animals" theme has moved onto learning about pets. We started the day by talking about pets and how these are animals which need us to care for them. The children knew some animals which were suitable for pets and we learnt how to sign some of them using Makaton. Then we had a circle time where the children told us about the pets they have at home and some children had photographs to share too. The children spoke clearly and in sentences and the others were excellent at listening to their friends.
We have enhanced our provision with different soft toy pets and equipment so the children can role play looking after pets in their play. Our book of the week is "Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy" and we will be reading lots of other story and non-fiction books about pets across the week too. We have been learning how to use a computer to play a game on our interactive whiteboard. It was a counting game so there was also lots of Mathematical learning. In addition to this, the children learnt to take turns and play together, helping each other when they could. Super work Shooting Stars!
Our Shooting Stars have really been developing their confidence with climbing and balancing on our clamberstack and they are so proud of themselves! Lots of them have learnt to climb higher and we even have some children who have reached the top and managed to hold onto the rope and swing- wow! What great physical development!!
In order to support our Understanding of the World, we celebrated the festival of Holi today. We learnt that Holi is the Hindu festival of colours and we all came to nursery wearing our brightly coloured clothes. We spoke about and recalled other festivals we have learnt about so far this year and then we watched a cbeebies clip to understand how Holi is celebrated. We were really interested in how they throw coloured powder paint at each other to celebrate! One of our activities was creating splatter paintings to remind us of the powder paint throwing. Firstly, we covered our paper in icing sugar mixed with water and then we dropped different coloured paper on top. We were fascinated by how the colours spread and mixed on the paper. As Holi is the festival of colours, we also had lots of colour related activities in our provision and we recapped the colour Makaton signs which we learnt in the Autumn term.
To finish our fun-packed day, we listened to some music played at the festival. We chose how we wanted to move to it and we spoke about what the music sounded like. Then we played it again and danced with our colourful ribbons- moving our bodies in different ways in response to the music. The children in nursery were VERY excited to see the snow today and were keen to go out and explore. We spoke about the need to wrap up warm and the children were so independent in putting on their coats, hats, scarves, gloves and wellies. Once outside we talked about the snow using words including cold, icy, freezing , wet, slippery and soft. The children enjoyed making footprints in the snow and we compared them as we discovered they were all different! Some children picked up the snow and moulded it into different shapes, we even made some tiny snow people on the table tops. Some children enjoyed throwing the snow and we learnt to do so safely by aiming at a target on the wall. Finally, we took some snow into nursery with us so we could find out what would happen to it inside our warm classroom.
