Supporting Comic Relief

17/3/2023

Today Rainbows supported Comic Relief, and what a worthy cause to support! We wore red to show our support and donated some money towards the charity. Some of our donations went towards a drink of juice to help raise money.

We decorated some biscuits using icing sugar and sprinkles and they looked fantastic! They were so delicious to eat!

Some of the staff in school took part in a race around the field including our very own Miss Hodgson. We donated some money and chose who we thought would win the race. Miss Hodgson received lots of votes from the children and came 3rd out of all the staff who participated. Well done Miss Hodgson! We are PROUD of you!

Here are some of the photos showing how we raised money for Comic Relief.

Maths on Welly Walk!

15/3/2023

Today the Rainbows have been on Welly Walk and incorporated maths with this!

They went on hunt around the school grounds to find natural items to bring back to school.

They had lots of fun measuring the things they found. They were able to use pasta to measure the items carefully from the top to the bottom and count how long the items were.

They also used rulers and tape measures to measure how long natural materials were. They know to put the tape or ruler at the very end of the item and measure to the other end of it by reading the numbers, making sure each measurement is correct by placing the ruler straight against it.

They could say how long all their items were and which were longer/shorter and the longest/shortest.

Well done Rainbows!

Dinosaurs

This week we have been learning about dinosaurs! We loved learning about this topic!

We used small world characters to make dinosaur scenes and have been looking at non-fiction books to find new facts and write them. For remote learning we wanted you to go on a “dinosaur safari.” We also wanted you to write a list of things you would need to take with you. We made dinosaur eggs that open and close in the creative area by adding a hinge with a split pin.

In maths we have been learning about different ways to make seven. We used dinosaur counters and split them into two groups. We also hid one of the groups of dinosaurs to make this trickier to find the second number! We had fun singing our dinosaur song to help us!

International Women's Day - Wangari Maathai.

We have been learning that International Women's Day celebrates the achievements of women across the world. During our Inspirational History Dress Up Day we were shocked to learn that in the past women in our country did not have the same opportunities as men. Some of the children had dressed as Emmeline Pankhurst, a suffragette. We know International Women's Day celebrates the achievements that women have made to our community, country and across the world.

We learnt about Wangari Maathai, an environmentalist from Africa who was lucky to go to school and university and achieve different qualifications. We know she fought against people who were destroying the Kenyan landscape by cutting down trees, and she even went to prison. We were relieved to learn that Wangari never stopped believing, and never stopped fighting and was finally voted in as a member of parliament and able to make changes to protect the Kenyan environment. She even helped other countries to make changes and helped protect our world for future generations.

We made some trees in the creative area to celebrate Wangari's achievements. We practised our cutting and snipping skills and helped develop our motor skills by twisting small bits of tissue paper into blossom flowers. Our blossom trees look beautiful!

Spontaneous winter learning!

Today, Team CW were delighted that it was a snowy day! We spoke lots about the winter weather and what it felt and looked like. We went outside to explore the snow! Some of us made mini snowmen by sculpting the snow by pressing and moulding it together. We explored our footprints, rolled it into balls, made different shapes and tried to catch it on our clothes and on our tongue! We talked about what happened when it landed on different materials and what it sounded like when we walked on it. Here are some of our comments and pictures of us exploring and having lots of fun!

"The snow is getting heavier!"
"The snowflakes are getting bigger."
"It's starting to melt." (When it landed on the concrete)
"Snowflakes are water that is frozen."
"It's cold on my tongue!"
"It's made out of ice and ice is made out of water."
"The snow is slippery on the ground."
"It won't stick because it is melting."
"It was crunchy."
"It crunched when I stood on it!"
"It was cold!"
"It is fluffy."
"I made the snowman's head by rolling it."

Dress a potato challenge for World Book Day!

Team CW were set a homework challenge for World Book Day; to dress a potato! They had to choose their favourite book, discuss the characters, choose their favourite character from the book and describe what they look like, and finally dress their potato including as much decoration as possible!

We can see how much discussion went on between parents and Rainbows and how much detail was included in their design. Here are a selection of our fantastic homework creations below! Can you guess the characters?

Caring for animals

We have been enjoying learning about animals for this half terms topic. Today we were lucky to have a visit from Mrs Wilson, the CEO of ECM Academy Trust.

Mrs Wilson told us all about the horses she keeps and how to care for them. We were able to look at some of the riding equipment Mrs Wilson uses and she demonstrated how to tack up a horse. It was a really interesting lesson and most of us had never seen equipment like this before. We learnt how to keep ourselves protected and safe when riding a horse as well and what equipment we need for this. We asked Mrs Wilson some questions about things we would like to know to too!

Today we have been taking part in active maths for "Feel Good Friday,"
We practised throwing and catching and each time we caught the beanbag we said the next number. We practised counting to 20. Here are some photos of our active maths!

We love reading!

Team CW love reading and have enjoyed reading our core book Farmer Duck!

We have all our core books for each half term displayed on our book shelf so we can sit and read with our friends! We love reading with adults too and often ask to share a book with them. Here are some of us in our reading area talking about stories, retelling them and trying to Fred Talk to read some words.

Each week a child is chosen to create a Time to Shine poster at home to celebrate themselves. They can add photos, stickers, drawings and write about their family and interests. We display their poster on a display then after a week it is added to our Time to Shine folder in the reading area. You can see some Rainbows enjoying our Time to Shine folder with their friends below.

Voting for story time

2/3/2023

Today for World Book Day the Rainbows voted for their favourite book. There were two choices and whichever book the children would prefer to listen to at story time they had to add one cube to the tower. They knew that the tower with the most cubes was the book we would read at story time.

The book with the most votes was "Can't You Sleep Little Bear."

We will continue with the vote everyday!
