This week we have been reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
We made bridges in the construction area to take the goats safely across the river. We used a variety of different materials to test if they were strong enough. We tried different ways of connecting them together to see which worked the best. We sequenced the story using pictures and retold it to our friends using story language and key phrases from the book. We also made story settings for characters so we could re-enact the story in our small world area. We used soft toys to retell the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and have enjoyed joining in with phrases throughout the book. We all took part in drama activities and practised using different voices and actions for the three bears and Goldilocks. We used cubes to measure the bear's chairs and counted to see how high they are. To develop our motor skills we challenged ourselves to pick up small objects within the space of a minute using tweezers. We even challenged our friends to see if we could beat them! In phonics we have been learning some tricky red words and are learning to spot these in books and around our classroom. We are continuing to learn Set 1 and 2 sounds and some of us are making great progress reading "Fred in your head" to become fluent readers! In maths we have been learning about subtraction. Firstly we began by learning the different vocabulary for takeaway and have been using the words "takeaway", "minus" and "subtract," We have also been using the words "how many are left". We used different resources to take away objects from a set number and counted them to find the answer. We were really good at making towers, taking some blocks away and counting how many were left! Next we counted out the number of blocks we need to start with from a larger group. We have all been reading subtraction number sentences and some of us have enjoyed writing them! For Feel Good Friday we chose to do some dancing! Feel Good Friday is always one of our favourite days and we enjoy keeping fit and healthy. We have been talking about how our body feels different before and after exercise, We can't wait for next time!

This week we have had fun listening to the traditional story of The Gingerbread Man and using this story as a way of developing our use of story language and ability to talk about story events in our own words. The classroom provision has been enhanced with Gingerbread man related activities this week and through this we have developed our creative skills, story telling with puppets, adding to 9 and writing the dominant sounds in words. We have been coding using "Beebot" our class robot. We drew arrows to plan the route Beebot needed to follow on his track (forwards, backwards, left, right) and programmed him to follow them! We had so much fun and some of us even planned a return route home! During Welly Walk there was even a Gingerbread man hiding in the bushes for the children to find whilst they were making collections of 9 interesting objects. This week has been a busy first week back at school after the holidays. It was lovely to see everyone again. We have started our learning about Traditional stories with the Three Little Pigs. The children have listened to different versions of the story and used puppets to retell the story in their own words. They enjoyed getting into character in the role of the Big Bad Wolf. We have set the role play area up as a construction site for the Three Little Pigs with lots of opportunities for model making and creating props for story telling. On Wednesday the children went on a well walk and worked in teams to create stick houses for the little pigs. Over the past 2 weeks we have had lots of excitement in class getting ready for Christmas.
We have practised and performed a Nativity story, which is on our class Seesaw page. We have also learnt lots of Christmas songs with Makaton signs, such as Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer which we performed in our homemade reindeer hats for the school Christmas Youtube performance. We have made decorations and some funny elves. Our class Elf has been up to tricks in our classroom and we have enjoyed writing about the Elf as well as sharing stories about our elves at home. On Monday 14th Santa visited our class and brought us some early Christmas presents to take home. We have also enjoyed our Christmas party and a celebration to the end of term. This week we have been listening to the story of Day Monkey and Night Monkey by Julia Donaldson. From this story we have been talking about opposites as well as rhyming words. We have investigated transparent materials in our investigation area and dark den.
We are excited about the start of advent and have made some Santa advent calendars to take home for the start of advent. We have also made Christingles and learnt about the importance of advent. This week we have been reading the story of Noah's Ark and learning all about Rainbows.
We have been experimenting with colour mixing primary colours to make all the colours of the rainbow. We have also been exploring lights and prisms to see if we can make rainbows by shining lights through th prisms. This week we have had lots of fun listening to the story of Elmer and doing all sorts of Elmer related activities, such as making giant elephant ears, creating a large patchwork Elmer of different textures and designing patterned elephants for a parade. We also discussed the themes of friendship and kindness, which are the themes of Anti-bullying week 2021. Building on from our learning earlier in the week around Simon sock and Odd sock Day we talked about how people can be friends even if they have differences.. There have been so many important events happening lately that we have been learning about. At the beginning of the week we were learning all about Diwali - The Festival of Light. We read the story of Rama and Sita to learn how and why the celebration takes place. There were lots of exciting activities we took part in including making paper lanterns in our creative area and making clay diva lamps being really careful to mould the clay into the correct shape. At the end of the week our learning was focused on Remembrance and why we have a special day to remember the soldiers and events that happened so long ago. We all made a poppy and wore it with pride! We made some beautiful photo frames to take home and place a picture of someone who is special to us. We also talked about purple poppies and how important it is to remember the animals who helped soldiers in the war. On Welly Walk we collected lots of different shapes, sizes and colours of leaves and have begun to make a beautiful patterned fence by weaving the leaves in and out of each other. You might spot this when you walk past our nature area! We have been taking part in some mindfulness activities including smelling spices and talking about what they remind us of and have completed some lovely colouring activities. Instead of our daily mile we took part in some Yoga activities to help us keep fit and healthy and to also help relax our mind! This week we started the week with the story of Meg and Mog and talking about our half term activities and Halloween. The children enjoyed playing in our Potions Lab, looking for surprises hidden in the playdough, making colourful monster puppets and creating a small world ghost train with the train set. The children were able to practise their 'Fred talk and read the word' reading some of the words from Meg and Mog independently. They also enjoyed more Meg and Mog stories over the week. In Numeracy we practised identifying patterns, continuing repeating patterns and creating our bonfire and spooky patterns. With Bonfire night happening at the week end the children got in the mood with a virtual bonfire, creating sparkly firework pictures and writing firework sound words. We have all learnt lots about people who help us and emergency services this week! For the first half of the week learnt about doctors and health care workers who help us stay well and make us better. Our Role Play Area was a doctors surgery and we learnt and used lots of new words which helped us to make our friends better including "medicine," "patient" and "examination." We carefully looked at real x-rays and created our own using straws, white paint and black paper. We cut the straws really small to include lots of detail! In our Investigation Area the Rainbows completed a fingerprint investigation and also have been learning about the importance of keeping clean. For the second half of the week learnt about being firefighters. We counted and sprayed out "flames" in our water tray with numbers on, and have been ordering these numbers too. In our Small World Area we created and built a fire station and used new vocabulary to tell stories. We used words such as "rescue" "emergency" and "support". We made some AMAZING fire engines in our junk modelling area and carefully added lots of detail after we painted them, sticking on wheels, windows, ladders and hoses. Rainbows have loved programming "Beebot" our class robot with instructions. Beebot was a fire engine this week and he needed to put out fires around our town. We programmed him with instructions one at a time so he moved across the map and could rescue the people! |
