Over the past two weeks we have been learning about different jobs. We started with setting the roleplay area up as a bakery and finding about about different occupations. The children thought about what they wanted to do when they grow up..
We have been learning about harvest and with this in mind we enjoyed the story of The Little Red Hen and made speech bubbles for the hen and other characters from the story. As part of our provision activities we made salt dough cakes for the bakery and designed cakes. We chose different 2d shapes as part of our cake designs and made 2d shape hens later in the week.. The next week we have moved on to learning more about jobs in the community, in particular the emergency services. We have changed 0ur role-play area into a Doctors and have been practising our bandaging techniques and how to call in an emergency. We have shared stories based on the theme of hospitals and firefighters.. In our provision we have made X-ray paintings and roleplayed air and sea rescues with the emergency vehicle toys. We have used boxes to construct emergency vehicles. On Welly walk we have been learning about patterns and making patterns with the natural materials we have found. Our Maths learning has been all about the number 5. There is so much to learn about number 5 that we have spent a whole 2 weeks on this number. Counting, recognising, subertising, adding and subtracting, as well as telling number stories about 5.

We have been learning about two stories this week. The first story was The Tiger Who Came to Tea! We really loved this story and enjoyed making some tiger patterns in the painting area and repeating patterns in the construction area. We coloured and cut out tiger headbands and wrote a shopping list because the tiger ate all the food! In the water tray we counted how many cups it took to fill the different sized tiger containers and have been enjoying serving cakes in our classroom bakery! We also enjoyed reading the Bad Tempered Ladybird and have been using words related to time and the time of day. We created some beautiful ladybirds in the creative area by painting paper plates and joining parts together to add the ladybird's features. We hung them across the classroom so we can watch them fly! We wrote about important things we do in our day and made some clocks. We rolled a dice and acted like an animal from the story that it landed on using different actions and noises. We had lots of fun on Welly Walk and have been looking at how the seasons are changing and what happens when Autumn arrives. We have been singing some harvest songs and have joined in with actions. In Read Write Inc we have been continuing to learn Set 1 letter sounds and have been listening to Fred Talk to hear and read words. Some of us have been writing words with familiar sounds! What a busy week but we had lots of fun! This week in class we have been thinking about friendship and what makes a good friend. We have shared stories about friendship and composed our own class rules based on what we decided would be needed for a happy classroom. We are focussing on our rule about looking after property and remembering to choose it, use it and put it away. The children have enjoyed making friendship bracelets, decorating rainbow fish and playing team games such as using the parachute for a fun Friday activity. We are also on our second week of phonics and taking part in our daily Read Write Inc sessions. Each week there will be a diary on Seesaw which will tell you more detail about our learning activities for the week and sounds covered in phonics as well as some homework activities linked to the weeks themes. Over the past few weeks the Rainbows have been working hard at making friendships and learning new rules and routines. Each week we have a new theme to our learning.
Week 1 was our transition week where the children worked on familiarising themselves with their new classroom, adults and children. They enjoyed their first school dinners and by the end of the week had their first full days at school. We shared stories about starting school such as: Harry and his Dinosaurs go to School and Our class is a Family. Week 2- Who am I? This week was all about getting to know some ways that we are special, unique and different; as well as ways we are the same. The children began painting pictures of themselves, talking about what activities they enjoy out of school, We also shared stories about uniqueness such as: Happy Holidays!!! What are you doing to enjoy the warm weather? I'm sure you have lots of ideas. Here are some fun ideas I have found that I might have a go at over the holidays. Maybe you will like some of these too. www.muminthemadhouse.com/10-cool-kids-activities-for-hot-days/ Over the past 3 weeks we have been learning ab0ut growing.
We have linked this learning to the stories of Jack and the Beanstalk for the first week of this topic. The children enjoyed planting bean seeds and making a castle in a cloud for their bean plants to grow towards. They were excited to see that after weekend the beans had germinated and were starting to grow shoots. Moving our learning on we shared the story of The Enormous Turnip. The children enjoyed weighing and comparing different sized turnips and making up their own versions of the story. They also enjoyed making giant fruit and vegetable paintings. On our third week of growing we have read stories from the Oliver's Vegetables series. We have learnt about different types of fruit and vegetables and created shopping lists of our favourite fruit and veg as well as exploring the insides of fruit and looking at the seeds. This week the Pandas have enjoyed learning about different farm animals. We have watched video clips from Cannon Hall farm seeing as we have been unable to make a farm visit this year. and learnt about how they care for their sheep and baby lambs during lambing time.
We have shared stories with a farming theme such as Farmer Duck. From this story the children discussed the theme of working hard, team work and caring for each others. Over the past 2 weeks the Pandas have been learning about Minibeasts. We have listened to stories about Minibeasts; such as the Bad Tempered Ladybird, Norman the slug with a Shell, The Very Busy Spider and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
We have learned about doubles by doubling the spots on ladybirds and symmetry, where we have made symmetrical paintings. We have sorted minibeasts by the number of legs and created all sorts of different hanging minibeast decorations for or classroom window. We have started going on Welly Walks and the children have really enjoyed the opportunity to explore and see what minibeasts they can find. This week we have enjoyed an Easter egg hunt following the clues, creative activities making chickens, decorating Easter baskets. making chocolate Easter nests and learning about melting materials. We have been ordering numbers on eggs and practising our skills are counting to 20 and comparing numbers.
The Pandas have really enjoyed learning about dinosaurs this week. The children were really knowledgeable about dinosaurs and could name lots of them and recall facts about them. We have watched Andy's Dinosaur Adventures to find out about some of the different dinosaurs and we have created our own coffee ground dough fossils using the impressions of small model dinosaur skeletons.
This week was also Science week and our fossil investigation was part of our class Science activity for the week. |
