Team JF have continued their computing learning on Purple Mash this week. The children logged on independently and were able to edit their profile with ease. From this, they started exploring the ‘topics’ section on the site. The children found their topic, ‘The Great Fire of London’, and started creating their own story board adding text and pictures.

Our oldest pupils in school have thoroughly enjoyed being back in the ICT suite and developing their computing skills. Pupils have applied their coding skills to create online games. We have worked on a range of Internet safety projects including: educational games, identifying risks and creating projects to help pupils keep themselves and others safe.
This half term, Team LF have been using 2Logo (Purple Mash) to write code in order to control an on-screen marker, incorporating their mathematical knowledge, in order to draw shapes and letters. Throughout the unit the children have:
There were strong links between 2Logo and maths, and it was beneficial for the children to think about their knowledge of angles when creating their coding language. This week, Team JF have started their new scheme of learning. They started off by discussing key vocabulary of computing such as login and passwords. The children then discussed the importance of this information and how they could handle it. The children received their new login details and were able to log onto the system independently. When they were on, Team JF created their own avatar to use on their profile going forward.
The children really enjoyed their learning and can't wait to see what's in store for them next! As part of their computing lessons, Teams AF and LL have been using Purple Mash for coding. They first started by coding a game called ‘Splatty Bug’. The children had to create an algorithm so that the timer would work, the player would get a score and the bugs would splat if you clicked them. Teams AF and LL then made these their own and changed the background and some other aspects. Throughout this task, the children had to use their computing skills to debug any errors. Here is an example: After this, the children were given the challenge to make their own game. They have started to design their games and thought carefully about what will be needed in the algorithm to make the game work.
Dear Parent/Carer,
We want to make you aware of a LIVE assembly we have organised for our pupils (both those in school and at home) linked to the importance of online safety. The assembly will take place on Thursday 9th July at 2pm and will be linked to ‘Be Internet Legends’, an online safety programme fully funded by Google. ‘Be Internet Legends’ is a multifaceted program developed by Google and Parent Zone to teach children the skills they need to be safe and confident online. The live assembly is developed by Google and Parent Zone’s expert teams and live-streamed from their studio by experienced presenters. The assembly is a bespoke session and aims to be an interactive educational adventure through the world of ‘Be Internet Legends’. The session will be presented live so that pupils at home and school can both get involved – and take part in the fun! The platform used to live stream the assembly on is Youtube. The developers of the assembly will send us a link prior to the scheduled date, which we will forward on to parents/carers by email. The assembly is designed for Key Stage 2 students; however, it is entirely up to you if you would like your child to take part – the more pupils the better! This is a chance to involve the whole school community. Many thanks for your continued support, Mr Fidment and Miss Garratt (Online Safety Leads) Here are a few more computing activities that you could do at home. Why not get all the family involved?
With many children having been home schooled for over a month now, we are aware that Internet Safety may not be at the forefront of their minds. Therefore, Shooting Stars Entertainment have created an Internet Safety Video, specifically for Primary aged children, which they are giving to us, completely free! With schools closed and tens of millions of students at home, Code.org have launched Code Break — a live, weekly interactive classroom where their team will teach your children at home while school is closed, and a weekly challenge to engage students of all abilities, even those without computers.
