OutAll the children were invited to wear clothing with a number on it and donate £1 to the NSPCC as today was Numbers Day. We had lots of fun learning about numbers together! At register time, we were all given a numberblock and we added it to a tower to show whether we are three or four years old. Then we looked together at the towers and talked about which we thought had the most and the least by comparing the sizes. We counted how many were in each tower and found out that most children in our nursery are three years old. Next we went on a treasure hunt! We found that there were 1p and 2p coins hidden all over nursery and we had a challenge to go and find as many as we could. We sorted them into containers of 1p and 2p and then we worked together to stack them and build coin towers. We talked about which tower was the tallest and the shortest and counted how many coins in each one.
'During the session, we also sang lots of different number songs and rhymes. In our provision, we explored different number puzzles and had a go at writing numbers too. Outdoors we played hopscotch and a target game of throwing beanbags into numbered hoops. Finally, to finish the session, we all sat together and watched Numberjack where we spotted lots of different numbers!

Today the children in nursery really enjoyed baking their own gingerbread men and there was lots of learning involved. Firstly, some of the older children followed a recipe and were able to carefully weigh out and mix the ingredients into a dough. Then all the children learnt to roll the dough and cut out a gingerbread man shape. Finally they chose their own way to decorate them using currants and cherries.
Today for our group time, we made music and sang together. Each child had their own musical instrument and learnt to play and stop in response to a signal, We also explored loud, soft, fast and slow through different songs and rhymes. We sang some familiar nursery rhymes and learnt some new songs too. We also danced in response to our music. Afterwards, the children enjoyed exploring the sounds of the different instruments with their friends. We were very impressed with how many children could remember the names of the different instruments we had learnt last term- maracas, bells, drums, tambourines, castanets and rain sticks. Today we also played a xylophone, triangle, cabasa, guiro, wave drum and two tone block, The children loved exploring and talking about the different sounds they made.
This week in our painting area, instead of brushes, the children have the opportunity to paint using cotton buds, This is great for developing their fine motor skills as they have to really concentrate and use smaller movements. The children have produced some lovely, detailed paintings using lots of different patterns.
Our new book of the week is "The Gingerbread Man." Today we read the story and the children learnt to join in with the repeated phrase "Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man."
There are lots of creative opportunities this week including using different collage and mark making materials to design our own gingerbread man and using gingerbread play dough to pretend to bake and decorate gingerbread men. This week we are focusing on number 4. We have watched the Numberblocks to help us find out about the number and we have been learning to represent it in different ways.
We are starting our Magical Storyland journey this week with a focus on "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." Today we read the story and the children were encouraged to join in with the repeated phrases and change their voices to match the different bears. In our role play and small world areas, we have lots of puppets, props and books to help us to act out and tell the story with our friends. Here are some photos of us engaged in our provision today:
Happy New Year to everyone and we hope you enjoyed a lovely family Christmas time.
Our new theme for learning this half term is Magical Storyland and we will be focusing our learning around a different traditional tale or nursery rhyme each week. We are looking forward to seeing everyone back in nursery tomorrow and also to welcoming some new children to our setting. The children were so excited to come to nursery wearing their Christmas jumpers today. It was lovely to see every child take part and they excitedly showed their jumpers to their friends at carpet time. We engaged in lots of fun learning activities throughout the session. As it was also 'Feel Good Friday' we had a go at some ribbon dancing and we played some parachute games in the outdoor area. This was lots of fun but also provided lots of opportunities for teamwork and developing our listening skills as well as those gross motor skills. The children also enjoyed creating their own Christmas jumpers using collage materials and mark making and we made reindeer food as a focused activity.
At snack time, we had Christmas cake! Some of the children loved it but some weren't so keen! Ask your child if they liked their Christmas cake. The children in nursery enjoyed creating their very own chocolate reindeer today. Lots of the children could remember previous learning and knew how to melt the chocolate so they could pour it. They then added different toppings to create their reindeer. They learnt the word 'antlers' as they discussed what parts they needed to include.
