This week we have started a new unit of Maths linked to measurement and perimeter. The class began the week by measuring various different items and recognising how to use their ruler properly, as well as reasing to the nearest milimeter. From this the class worked hard to broaden their understanding of units of measurement and looked closely at conversion between mm and cm, cm and m and even m and km. The class saw this represented in many different ways and worked hard to use their reasoning and problem solving skills. For the latter half of the week, we have looked more closely at what "perimeter" is and how we calculate it. The class were great at providing a working definition and really clarifying their understanding of how to find it. Well done Team CB. Next week, we will be moving on to understanding the difference between area and perimeter and how we can find the area of a shape.
Meanwhile, in Literacy this week we have worked hard in the writing process to construct our newspaper reports about the Anglo Saxon invasion. The class have worked so hard to develop their language choice and a few of Miss Baxter's favourites were; 'scoping out the surroundings', 'imminent attack' and 'in the face of fear'. Next week we will develop the editing process to ensure that what we have produced is high quality before our publish and present aspect. In Science this week we have continued to refine our understanding of classification keys and how to construct them through the game of Guess Who. Next week we will use our knowledge to use a classificaiton key to determine different invertebrates which can be found in our nature reserve. I wonder what we might find? Did you know the Anglo Saxons to this very day influence England? The class have been busy exploring how place names signify the existence of the Anglo Saxons. In our topic learning, the class looked at suffixes which were commonly given by Anglo Saxons and explored which towns and cities could be rooted within Anglo Saxon history. From this, they they compared modern day Britain with Anglo Saxon Britain to determine which kingdom they were from. Check back next week for a further update on our learning journey!

News just in! King Vortigern has expressed his grave concern over rumors that the Anglo Saxons are planning on invading. That's right! This week in Literacy, the class have received a very important message from the King asking for their help to spread the news. As such, the class decided the only way to do this was by writing a newspaper article and delivering these to the citizens of Britain to share this unexpected information. The class have worked really hard to begin to understand what makes a good newspaper, by identifying features and functions before using this to establish their own success criteria for writing. Following this, the class have worked on refining key skills such as accurately applying the rules of speech (we know how important it is to get a quote from the King himself!) before beginning to plan their writing. Be sure to check in with us to see how the writing process goes next week.
Meanwhile, in Maths the class have worked tirelessly to secure their knowledge and confidence in applying the appropriate procedure to solve problems linked to the four operations. I could not be more proud of the progress that they have made this week. A huge thumbs up from me Team CB! In our topic, we have been investigating the chronology of Anglo Saxon history and understanding where this sits in relation to history overall. The class were fantastic at identifying key events, as well as researching other local, national and international events which took place at the time. We also explored how the Anglo Saxons arrived into Britain and how the country was split into the seven kingdoms as a result. Be sure to check back with us next week to see what new learning we uncover! In our Science, we have been busy trying to understand the classification system. We used Guess Who! to help recognise the way different things can be classified and created our own classification keys. Next week we will be taking this knowledge outdoors when we go on our own invertebrate hunt! Check back soon for more updates. This week Team CB have been working hard across all aspects of their learning. We have been really busy concluding our learning in Maths around division. As a team we have investigated word problems linked to division, as well as ways in which we can reason practically based on what we already know. We have then used this is a series of problem solving situations, such as competitive games where the children had to use their resources to make the highest or lowest possible total. The mathematical discussion which came from this was fantastic, with the children thinking really carefully about the way the dividend and divisor influenced the answer. Next week we will be consolidating our learning on all 4 operations.
In our Literacy, we continued with our work on our news broadcasts. This week saw the children begin to write their broadcast script and think critically about the questions they asked in their interview in order to get the best response. Once we had produced our scripts, we worked in small groups to begin to fetch the script to life. The class worked in teams of 4, taking on different roles such as the news-reporters, interviewer and interviewee. We then recorded the videos, edited them and played them to share our news! The class really enjoyed this unit and the work they created was fantastic! Well done Spectacular Space Cadets. Elsewhere, in topic this week we have completed our work around the Sutton Hoo discovery, Did you know that the artefacts found there suggest it could have been a King who was buried? The class were so good at using their inference skills to deduce what the artefacts told us! In our science, we continued with our new unit of Classification and Variation. The class investigated the 7 life processes needed to keep us alive, as well as begin to look a types of living things, including vertebrates and invertebrates and how we group them. Pop back next week to see what else we get up to in our learning! Welcome back! I hope you all had a very restful and happy Christmas with those who matter most. The class have come back to school with excellent enthusiasm for learning this week and a sparkling attitude! Excellent work Spectacular Space Cadets!
This week we have started to look at the final of our four operations, division. The class worked practically to explore the concept of division through use of sharing with place value counters. This enabled them to understand terms such as dividend and divisor and how these were involved in the division process. Once the class felt more confident with this, we looked more closely at the formal written method for division. The class picked this up quickly and felt confident around tackling fluency based problems. Next week, we will be looking at how we can start to reason and problem solve involving division. Elsewhere, in Literacy we have started a new unit on News. The class investigated a newspaper article about a hoard of Anglo Saxon coins which had been discovered and were challenged with retelling this in a news broadcast. We looked at similarities and differences between the two forms of media. This enabled us to establish a success criteria for writing, before we began to plan our own structure. Next week, the class will work to create their own broadcast script before videoing, editing and publishing their work to the whole school in an assembly. I am so very excited to see the end product! In our topic sessions, we have now moved towards a history based focus. Our theme this half term is the Anglo Saxons. To kick start our learning, yesterday the class completed an archaeological dig linked to Sutton Hoo, where they found various artefacts and had to infer what they could be, who they were for and why they were used. The class' verbal reasoning was fantastic, with well thought-through, refined answers. Next session they will use secondary sources of evidence to support in researching exactly what their primary evidence is and the story that it tells. Check back next week for further updates! |
