As part of this years 'International Day of Women in Science' Years 4 and 5 were given the very exciting opportunity to take part in the 'Silly Science' workshop. Professor Nitrate guided the children through an exciting tour of discovery! They learnt about elements, why molecules bond, the magic of lift, power of pressure and exciting explosions! The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and depended their understanding.

Team JD have made a great start to their new unit of learning. They have explored parts of the digestive system and even carried out an investigation already to find out how tooth decay occurs! Team JD carried out this half terms enquiry by exploring the effects of global warming on the planet. In teams, they were given the challenge of designing and building (using Lego bricks) a sustainable city! They included elements such as solar power, recycling centres and electric vehicles.
Team AC carried out this half terms enquiry focus by solving the problem 'How can we get a marble from one side to the other without touching, walking or batting it?' They used great team work skills to solve this!
Team AC have made a fantastic start to their new unit of learning. To begin with, children researched on the iPad to sort a variety of well known rocks into natural and man made categories. After that, they centred their learning around the three rock types and listed features of these. From this, they were able to think about the properties of thee rock types and tested to see if they were permeable, durable or dense, Team JF completed this half terms enquiry focus by solving a problem for the Three Billy Goats Gruff. They worked really hard to design, build and test a new bridge for them to walk over. They demonstrated great team work skills and designed some fabulous bridges!
Team JF have made a great start to their unit of learning. After a pre unit assessment, they moved into identifying a range of everyday materials and some of the objects made from these. Team CH have made a start o their new unit of learning, 'materials'. They identified some objects before deciding the materials and sorting.
Team CH have completed this half terms enquiry focus and solved the problem of how to keep the big bad wolf from blowing down the houses of the three little pigs!
Team EO carried out this half terms enquiry focus by solving the problem 'how to protect the golden egg from cracking'.
