American cartoonist, Rube Goldberg, designed silly contraptions which used an indirect and overly-complicated chain reaction to perform a very simple task. For our science enquiry, we built some out of everyday objects. We didn't have a task to achieve at the end; we just aimed for a chain of 4 reactions using different forces such as push, accelerate, drop, roll, etc. We managed to catch a few on film working all the way through, and some clips for the bloopers reel.

Team CB are also moving on to rocks. The class generated many thoughtful questions that they wanted to find the answer to in this topic. We will be comparing and sorting the physical features as well as learning about fossils and their formation.
Looking at different rock types: Metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary. We explored the different rocks and their name in each type and how they are formed, children made notes to support their learning in future weeks.
Team CH have been thinking like investigators and asking questions about the materials in their boxes.
Head over to their page to see some photos too! At the end of Autumn term, Team JF took part in a seasonal walk in Wombwell. The children were incredibly observant whilst being very sensible and safe. As we set off from the school grounds, we started to look at the changes to our environment during this season. We stopped at regular intervals to discuss what we could see and why these changes were occurring. As we arrived at our destination (a large open field space) we split off into small groups to explore the surroundings and hopefully tick off some of the autumnal changes. I was so proud of the way the children conducted themselves and how engaged they were in their learning. When we arrived back at school, we looked closer and some of the findings we brought back and discussed these. We then proceeded to complete our investigation pro forma as a class to present our findings.
Children have thoroughly enjoyed finding out all about the circulatory system and the function of our heart, lungs and blood vessels. We have also been finding out about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
PROBLEM SOLVING - is this terms scientific enquiry focus and Year 6 became detectives trying to get to the bottom of what exactly had happened at the hedgehog crime scence. Applying lots of problem solving skills, asking what if.. questions and using evidence to make predictions and draw conclusions. |
