THE LEGENDARY LEARNERS
In numeracy we have been working hard on multiplying numbers including decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. This has drawn on our place value, division and multiplication skills and knowledge. We have been revising and extending our knowledge of the formal method for multiplication. We have also been working on applying our addition, subtraction and multiplication skills to a range of reasoning challenges and word problems.
In literacy, we continue to follow the adventures of Alex Rider through our class novel Stormbreaker. We have used the book to initiate discussion and develop our inference and prediction skills. In literacy lessons we have been learning about complex expanded noun phrases. determiners and pronouns. We have also been tackling some tricky texts and refining our reading comprehension skills. The focus over the last couple of weeks has been explanation and inference.

Whilst reading our class novel Stormbreaker, the class were set the challenge of supporting Alex Rider with his decision making process. In the chapter 'So What Do You Say?' Alex is asked to take on a dangerous mission under cover. The pupils in year 6 worked hard to generate points for and against and we created diamond 9s and had a pretty exciting class debate. We also explored features of persuasive and balanced letter writing and the pupils each wrote to Alex giving their thoughts and opinions. some first class letters created Well done!
In week 4 year 6 were presented with an equally tricky challenge. After reading all about the whacky gadgets Alex was given to use on his mission the class were given the job of creating their own spy gadget. In pairs and small groups the children set about drawing their designs and writing all about the features, instructions for use and warnings for each gadget.. To make things even more exciting Team AF and Team LL had to compete in a Dragon's Den type competition to pitch their designs. A winner gadget was chosen from each class. In maths we continued to further develop our place value skills with some exciting reasoning activities, games and problem solving. In week 4 we have been revising formal written methods for addition and subtraction and applying our skills to word problems and other challenging problems and activities. Welcome back! Team LL have had an amazing first week back. We have engaged in two really brilliant transition days. The children have suggested a wide range of things they would like to learn about and are really looking forward to exploring the topics we have planned. We have started reading our class novel Stormbreaker and all the pupils are totally hooked already. In maths we have began some revision around place value and have been trying out a range of challenges and problems. All in all an amazing first week back for our brand new Year 6 pupils!
Eventhough we have been back to learning Team LL have been amazing. They have engaged brilliantly during daily Zoom lessons and produced outstanding, division and ratio work on Seesaw. You have mored really hard on your reading comprehension work too. Well done and have an amazing Easter holiday.
It has been absolutely amazing to have all of Team LL back together again in school following partial school closures. We have had a busy week. In maths we have been working on algebra: exploring one step and two step function machines. We used Cuisenaire rods to develop some algebraic expressions. We have also been getting our times tables back up to super fast speed with a rerun of the Times Tables Race challenge. In literacy we have been building up our stamina for writing by completing some short write challenges. See below for some of the exciting activities we completed as part of Science week.
Team LL have been lucky enough to be engaging in workshops organised by Barnsley Youth Choir. Luke Mather's has led the workshps for Team LL. During the workshops we have explored different genres of music and explored dynamics, control, rhythm and pitch. Children have had the opportunity to learn and perform a range of songs. Most importantly it has been lots of fun.
Although most of Team LL were working at home it was great to see everyone on Class Zoom in their World Book Day dress up. We all enjoyed joining in the live lesson and enjoyed an additional literacy lesson from the amazing author Derek Landy. A fun day enjoyed by all.
Team LL have had an amazing Science Week. We were lucky enough to be involved with a virtual chemistry workshop ran by lecturers from Sheffield University. We attended online lectures and learnt about Sir Harry Kroto and his discovery of a third kind of carbon called the Buckminsterfullerene - or Buckyball for short. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The class had the challenge of creating their own models of the mollecule.
Team LL were set a challenge as part of British Science Week. They were asked to think about what a classroom of the future might look like. After research and discussion the children set about creating their future classroom plans.
After all the had work of researching, planning, designing, prototype building, testing, making and evaluating our amazing natural disaster sculptures are finally complete. We had lots of fun designing and making them.
