THE LEGENDARY LEARNERS
We have continued our learning about natural disasters through exploring the makeup of the earth including tectonic plates. We have learnt all about how these can cause natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. We have developed our map and atlas skills and we loved taking on the world map challenge where we had to locate various places we have been learning about on the world map and use locational language to describe their position. We also had fun combining our maths, geography and computing skills to book a trip to Japan including flights, accommodation, transfers and attraction tickets. Some groups had to work to a tight budget others were given the brief of catering for the luxury market. We had lots of fun.

We have been tackling fractions this half term. We began with finding equivalents, comparing and ordering fractions. We then moved on to addition and subtraction of fractions where the denominators were the same and then when they were different. We are experts at finding the lowest common multiple and making sure our fractions have common denominators but remain equivalent to the original fractions. It doesn't stop there we are also able to multiply fractions by fractions and fractions by integers. We are also now able to divide fractions by integers. We have developed the skills to convert improper fractions to mixed fractions and back again and also to simplify our answers as required. We can also find fractions of amounts. In our final week before Christmas we will be learning how to plot co-ordinates in all four quadrants. To be honest it is pretty exhausting being a Year 6 at Park Street - but we do love maths!
In Team LL and AF we have explored fiction and non-fiction. We have been looking at features of historical narrative through reading extracts of Emma Carroll’s Secrets of a Sun King in preparation for next terms work on the Egyptians. In our work on non-fiction texts we have explored biographies. We have explored a wide range of biographies identifying key features. Pupils then carried out research around Guy Fawkes, the Gun Powder Plot and Guy’s gruesome demise. Each child in year 6 then wrote their own biography of Guy Fawkes. Using the features checklist created earlier in the half term pupils were able to evaluate their own writing identifying what went well and setting themselves targets for development. During our grammar work this half term we have looked at a wide range of punctuation including semi-colons and colons. Lots of children are now using these as appropriate within their own writing. We have also been identifying the subject, object and verb within a given sentence and identifying active and passive voice.
In our reading work, pupils have read a wide selection of non-fiction including biographies, information texts linked to natural disasters, historical sources, information texts and web pages linking to our RE topic on Buddhism. We have been equally enthralled by the fiction texts we have read including: a range of modern and historical narratives by authors such as George Layton, Emma Carroll and Derek Landy. We explored Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky poem and read, learnt and performed a selection of Christmas poetry – which we recorded for our Christmas performance. We continue to work on our VIPER skills but have had a more detailed focus on inference reading comprehension questions around characters and their emotions and also questions requiring more detailed comparison description. Team LL and AF had a brilliant day at Crucial Crew. Representatives from the emergency services and other services worked with the children to cover a range of really interesting topics and areas to help children learn about their responsibilities, the law and how to keep themselves safe. A really valuable day of learning. Topics covered.
- The danger of hoax calls - Importance of fire safety - Danger of arson - What a magistrate court is like and what children over 10 need to know when they reach 10 - The importance of road safety - The dangers of child criminal exploitation - The danger of knife and hate crimes After running our daily mile on Feel Good Friday pupils noticed they could feel their hearts beating rapidly. As a result, we decided to investigate and look to see if we could find any patterns in relation to the BPM of our hearts and different types of activity. We recorded our findings and discussed the results.
Team LL were lucky enough to watch the really thought provoking performance of Ikonjane The Lightning Bird. The story touched on identity, migration, folklore, story telling and journeys. The performance was packed full of beautiful sculpture and artwork. Pupils also enjoyed engaging in a drama and music workshop in the afternoon. They also watched a film detailing all the work and different professions involved in bringing the Lightning Bird to life. Children enjoyed learning about a wide range of career opportunities in the arts- its never too early to start being aspirational!
Year 6 have been exploring the importance of having a positive body image. We have been working on making sure we stay positive when talking and thinking about ourselves. Everybody knows we should treat each other with respect and it is important that we remember that includes how we treat ourselves too.
We have been working incredibly hard over the last couple of weeks to make sure our mental and written methods for multiplication and division are spot on. We have also been applying our calculation skills to solve a range of problems and we have been tackling some tricky word problems. We are incredibly proud of the progress we are making with arithmetic. Things are getting incredibly exciting in literacy we have been writing some action packed descriptions. We have been exploring how authors like Anthony Horowitz create tension, pace and vivid descriptions. We have explored imagery and the use of complex expanded noun phrases and a range of cohesive devices. We are making excellent progress with our own descriptions.
As part of our science topic on electricity and circuits we have been exploring and experimenting with different circuits. Year 6 pupils have made circuits using a range of components including: cells, wires, bulbs, buzzers, motors and switches. We have recorded new things that we have learnt, applied our circuit diagram skills and generated a range of questions for investigation later in the term. We are working hard to learn and use technical scientific vocabulary.
