This term we have been looking at plants, first we went outside to look at the different types of plants we have on the school grounds. After that we looked at the names of national flowers in the United Kingdom and why these are significant. Team JF then looked at evergreen and deciduous trees and what the differences are between them.

We are very excited in nursery as our butterflies have finally emerged from their chrysalis. On Monday, we noticed there was one butterfly, yesterday there were three and today we have noticed that all five have emerged. The children were enthralled watching them dry their wings and gain the confidence to fly. At group time, we added some sugar mixed with water and some fruit into the net and some children noticed the butterflies tongue come out as they landed on the fruit. We are going to keep observing them over the next couple of days and then set them free in the nature reserve so they can fly away. Look at there team page for photos and more.
Our aim this lesson was to name the planets and be able to give key facts about each one. We looked at information cards and used our research skills to find further information on the internet Team JF carried out this half terms enquiry focus of 'observation over time' by investigation the question 'what is the best condition to grow cress?' To begin with, we decided on the conditions we would test. In the sun with water, in the sun without water, in the dark with water and in the dark without. From this, we each made our predictions. Over the course of the week we observed the changes to our plants and recorded our findings. The following week, we looked at our plants together and concluded they grew the best on the window (with sun) with water.
To kick start 'Science Week' at Park Street, KS1 and LKS2 children had the great pleasure of experiences the 'Animal Encounters' workshop! The workshop was fully interactive and designed to help children learn about animals in a safe and controlled environment. During this time, the children were given the opportunity to see, stoke and hold a range of animals! The children had the best time and thoroughly enjoyed their learning. What better way to discuss and explore the the theme of 'connections' than the links between animals, humans and lifecycles! As part of this years 'International Day of Women in Science' Years 4 and 5 were given the very exciting opportunity to take part in the 'Silly Science' workshop. Professor Nitrate guided the children through an exciting tour of discovery! They learnt about elements, why molecules bond, the magic of lift, power of pressure and exciting explosions! The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and depended their understanding. Team JD have made a great start to their new unit of learning. They have explored parts of the digestive system and even carried out an investigation already to find out how tooth decay occurs! Team JD carried out this half terms enquiry by exploring the effects of global warming on the planet. In teams, they were given the challenge of designing and building (using Lego bricks) a sustainable city! They included elements such as solar power, recycling centres and electric vehicles.
Team AC carried out this half terms enquiry focus by solving the problem 'How can we get a marble from one side to the other without touching, walking or batting it?' They used great team work skills to solve this!
Team AC have made a fantastic start to their new unit of learning. To begin with, children researched on the iPad to sort a variety of well known rocks into natural and man made categories. After that, they centred their learning around the three rock types and listed features of these. From this, they were able to think about the properties of thee rock types and tested to see if they were permeable, durable or dense, |
