During this half term, the school have been working hard to develop and refine their transcription skills. Generally, through school classes have focused on writing an instructional text and descriptive piece. In Team JF for example, the class have created their own tin birds and a set of instructions to accompany this linked to their class book The Tin Forest. In Team CB, the class have wrote an exceptional piece on a wolf based around Inside the Villains and Team JD have been describing the scene from the Lost Thing. Be sure to check out class "Handwriting Heroes" displays to see just how incredible their finished pieces are!

Thanks to pupil voice, we have been busy in recent weeks making some exciting plans to further raise the profile of writing across the school. We are in contact with a local poet with the hope of him attending Park Street in early 2023 to help inspire a love of poetry across the school, just in time for World Poetry Day.
Plans are brewing for parent workshops early in the Spring Term where parents will work alongside their children in a creative writing project run by class teachers. More details to follow! We are also working hard to develop handwriting expectations and are considering ways in which we can get children to rainbow write for a purpose. Be sure to keep an eye out for details on the blog for further information. What an incredible end to the week! Today marked the first "We love words" day at Park Street and what a success it was. The whole school looked absolutely outstanding dressed as their words. Costumes were planned with the greatest care and exceptionally creative. Throughout the day just a few of the words spotted were "Entomology", "Fragile", "Identical" and "Counter shading". Children truly rose to the occasion and awards were given for most best costumes and best word. Most importantly of all, the school was a buzz of noise around new words and their meanings. Children relished participating in their vocabulary parade (some were even spotted strutting their stuff in the nature reserve) and demonstrating what their word meant. Thank you Team Park Street for ALWAYS rising to the challenge. We loved to hear you all teaching, learning and applying new vocabulary!
Just a quick reminder, that next week is our very first "We love words day". The children through school are so excited about this event and I have heard the secret whisperings of some of the outfits that they intend to wear and I am certain it will be a phenomenal day. For anyone wishing to gather further information, attached is the letter which has gone out around the event.
Wow! All the children in the Arts Council were totally blown away with the number of entries we received for our Autumn Poetry competition. We spent a long time today reading all you poems and looking at the fantastic art work and illustrations too. We now have 5 entries that received full marks after we judged them. We are going to ask Mrs Lawson to choose the final three. The standard has been really high. We have designed certificates and every pupil that has entered will get one. There may be a little treat for everyone too. The three winners will receive arty goody bags and get to read their poems out at our Harvest Festival next week. Well done everyone who entered.
Parents/carers/children of Park Street - keep your eyes peeled over the next week as an exciting email should be arriving with a new event planned to celebrate our love of Reading and Writing. This is a new celebration on the Park Street calendar and staff are already excited to see the wonderful response to our new challenge!
Today marks National Poetry Day across the country. In school, we have been busy celebrating the special day in lots of ways. Miss Baxter and Mrs Lawson have been busy holding assemblies with our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes to share the day and enjoy a poem or two together. Children have also been busy knocking down the door of Team CB to come and read a poem with adults when they have had a spare second. It has been lovely to hear the children read with such confidence and expression.
We are also holding a Poetry competition within school, tied in to the theme for this year "the environment" by asking our children to create a poem about Autumn. This will be judged by our Arts Council, and already some of the entries we have received have been to an exceptionally high standard - judging will definitely be challenging! In Literacy, all classes in Key Stage 1 and 2 have been working hard on creating their own poems. Each class has has a different poetry focus, with Year 2 doing shape poems, Year 3 doing rhyme poems and so on. The children are very proud of these and can't wait to share them with wider school later in the term! During the first Autumn Term, it is important that children through school have chance to practise and revisit previously learned writing skills after a lengthy break. To support children with fusing the link between Reading and Writing, the first few weeks of the Autumn Term have been spent producing writing linked to each class' acclaimed author. In Team CH the class have been working on labels, lists and captions linked to Julia Donaldson texts. Team JF and Team AC have written a fact file on Oliver Jeffers and Anne Fine. In Team CB, the class have been busy delving deeper into Roald Dahl's life to create a biography. Elsewhere, in Team JD, a playscript linking to David Walliams is well underway. Meanwhile, Team DB have been writing a blurb linked to J K Rowling's work. In Team HG the focus has been on creating a one sided argument linked to Why the Whales came. It has been a truly brilliant start to the Autumn so far. We can't wait to see what will follow next in our writing units that are coming up!
To celebrate Roald Dahl as their Acclaimed Author, Team CB have been busy writing a biography of his life. There was a real buzz in class today as it was a very special day for Team CB - it was Roald Dahl's 106th birthday. The class have been bursting with facts to tell anyone who walked through Team CB's door, that they are featuring in their writing. Did you know he was nicknamed Lofty because he was 6 foot 6? Perhaps you were unaware that he was sent to boarding school where he was a chocolate taster - this is where his idea for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came from. If you're wanting to know more, be sure to pop past Team CB's window where you will find their brilliant biographies all about his life!
Welcome back to all our lovely students, parents and visitors. We hope you have had a restful Summer. Whilst staff have also enjoyed Summer, since arriving back to school our foot is firmly back on the pedal of supporting all of our students in becoming independent and successful writers. This year, our year begins with a focus on our class Acclaimed Authors through school. In classes, you can expect to find each Team studying their author. From Julia Donaldson and Oliver Jeffers to Michael Morpurgo and Anthony Horowitz, there is a true range of authors that the children will engage with! What the children won't know about some key authors by the end simply won't be worth knowing.
