Throughout this term, we have focussed on comparing Whitby with our hometown, Wombwell. We initially worked on locating the two towns on a map, as well as other coastal and rural places we have visited. To compare the physical and human geography of Whitby and Wombwell, we used maps and the internet to look at the landscape and created land use maps to identify key areas such as agriculture, industry, housing, business, retail etc. Further to this, we created our own electronic travel brochures to encourage people to visit Wombwell. As part of our cross curricular links, we have read Dracula and we have also created several pieces of writing based on Convict’s Tunnel, Whitby Abbey and the Lundhill mining disaster. Finally, we also targeted our map and atlas skills during some discrete lessons based on longitude/latitude.
