Our amazing Year 6 Geogers have been developing their knowledge and understanding of their locality and the wider world and continents. During the entire Autumn term, Park Street Year 6 Geogers, have been studying in detail , the location of the English capital city, London, their own county, South Yorkshire, and their home town, Barnsley. In doing so, they have been using their excellent map skills, using digital maps, maps and atlases, enabling them to recognise the distinct characteristics of these regions and how these have changed over time. The children are also beginning to develop an understanding of the broad land-use patterns of the UK and identifying that there are areas of agriculture, urban settlement and service industry developments, in particular, to their own locality. Through the use of maps, digital maps and atlases, our Year 6's have been able to locate countries and regions of the Pacific Ring. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world's mountain ranges and discovering all about the world's most famous volcanoes. They were amazed at how different factors beneath the Earth's surface, as well the location of the volcanoes themselves, can cause the most vicious eruptions! Let's get ready to rumble! The Year 6 Geogers, through looking at maps and the location of tectonic plates, began to recognise how the movement of these can cause Earthquakes. They were highly fascinated to learn about the Ring of Fire or the Pacific Ring, where this is found in the world and how many natural disasters can occur there. Further to their study, the children have been developing an understanding about the various natural disasters that occur around the world; from floods to blizzrds, to the consequences of tornadoes and hurricanes. The children voyaged over different continents, experiencing the physical effects of these extreme weather conditions to their locations, aloowing them to plan their own travel to none other than Japan!! In doing so, Year 6 are showing maturity and how they themselves are preparing for the wider world.

Team AC and Team CB learnt all about what life was like in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, during the first part of the school year. The children discovered how even though their topic was based around history, they were still learning about Geography at the same time. This allowed children to understand how their curriculum links together in a variety of different ways. The children used modern day and historical maps to locate their own local area, as well as further away as Skara Brae. The children focussed on the location of Skara Brae using compass point knowledge and map skills, and how this location can be found in the Orkney Islands, Scotland! The children also learnt about who the Romans were and why they invaded Britain, Teams AC and CB, experienced being a Roman for the day at Murton Park, establishing more of an understanding of why the Romans invaded and occupied Britain. Upon returning to the classroom, the children used maps to locate the countries invaded by the Romans, expanding the Roman Empire, and were able to state the continent / continents that the Roman Empire encompassed. Wow! The children in Teams JD, DB and HG have been super busy during the Autumn term. The children have been learning all about Europe and discovering the different countries that make up the continent. The children studied hard to locate the various countries, by using their map skills digitally, using globes and in books, to be able to complete their own maps. The children were already aware of the term European Union, but came to understand that the UK were no longer a part of the Union, but this did not stop them being part of the continent. The whole year group were amazed to learn that Russia was also a part of Europe, and had many questions regarding the conflict between the Ukraine and Russia. We decided to study six major countries for the children to learn about, developing an understanding about different cultures, climates and cuisines, taking part in a food tasting session with foods specifically coming from that region. They also focussed upon the key topographical features found in these localities. Following this the children looked at the water cycle and the effect that this has on land changes over time. Towards the end of the Autumn term, the children in the three year groups, developed a more indepth understanding about Greece and how the similarites and differences between modern day Greece and Ancient Greece. The children superbly used their history knowledge to help them with this, and we were all amazed at the buildings or ruins that are still a part of the Grecian landscape still today! We are really excited to share our learning with you below. In Team JF the children have been learning all about the weather during the Autumn term. They have been on a walk around their loval area, experiencing the effects of Autumn in their own locality. The children have been introduced to new vocabulary based on weather around the world, expanding on their previous knowledge, using compass directions and learning more about the world that we live in. Team JF have discovered that there are seven continents and five oceans, and how there is an imaginary line around the Earth called the Equator. The children have developed their understanding about how it gets warmer towards the Equator and how it gets much colder the closer you travel to the North and South Poles! This helped the Team JF Geogers when it came to deciding about appropriate clothing to wear in certain types of weather conditions and why. Take a look at the children's fabulous learning below. In Team CH, our Year 1 Geogers have been very busy during the Autumn term! They have been investigating the weather and learning about the different weather patterns that can occur throughout the world. The children have broadened their understanding about the world around us, by naming the different continents and oceans on a world map using the school atlases and globes, as well as online maps.
Take a look at their fabulous Geography learning below. During the 1st part of the Autumn term the children of Park Street have settled superbly into their learning of their Geographical topics. Each year group, throughout the school, has been focussing upon an aspect of Geography as part of their topic area of learning. In Team EO, the Reception / Year 1 Geogers have been out and about exploring the locality surrounding the school, on their welly-walks. The children have frquented the school's nature reserve, observing the effects of the seasons on the plants and trees. They have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, where they have witnessed Autumn in all of it's splendour and have compared this to other seasons throughout the year. These wonderful Geogers have been learning about the weather, introducing new vocabulary into their learning and discovering the effects of extreme weather around the world. The children developed their skills and knowledge about how to describe the weather and what it is like during different seasons of the year. Take a look at their experiences. |
