Our amazing Year 6 Geogers have been developing their knowledge and understanding of their locality and the wider world and continents. During the entire Autumn term, Park Street Year 6 Geogers, have been studying in detail , the location of the English capital city, London, their own county, South Yorkshire, and their home town, Barnsley. In doing so, they have been using their excellent map skills, using digital maps, maps and atlases, enabling them to recognise the distinct characteristics of these regions and how these have changed over time. The children are also beginning to develop an understanding of the broad land-use patterns of the UK and identifying that there are areas of agriculture, urban settlement and service industry developments, in particular, to their own locality. Through the use of maps, digital maps and atlases, our Year 6's have been able to locate countries and regions of the Pacific Ring. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world's mountain ranges and discovering all about the world's most famous volcanoes. They were amazed at how different factors beneath the Earth's surface, as well the location of the volcanoes themselves, can cause the most vicious eruptions! Let's get ready to rumble! The Year 6 Geogers, through looking at maps and the location of tectonic plates, began to recognise how the movement of these can cause Earthquakes. They were highly fascinated to learn about the Ring of Fire or the Pacific Ring, where this is found in the world and how many natural disasters can occur there. Further to their study, the children have been developing an understanding about the various natural disasters that occur around the world; from floods to blizzrds, to the consequences of tornadoes and hurricanes. The children voyaged over different continents, experiencing the physical effects of these extreme weather conditions to their locations, aloowing them to plan their own travel to none other than Japan!! In doing so, Year 6 are showing maturity and how they themselves are preparing for the wider world.
