Today the Rainbows had so much fun dressing up as their favourite historical character and sharing facts about them. We learnt that people in the past changed our world so we can have the life we had today. We talked about lots of interesting things including women's rights, technology and medicines.
Some of the inspirational figures we chose to teach our friends about were Emmeline Pankhurst, Neil Armstrong, Charles Dickens, Marie Curie, Edward Jenner, Andy Warhol, Cleopatra, Tutankhamun and medieval kings including Henry VIII. Miss Clementson came as Amy Johnson (the first female aviator to fly solo from London to Australia) Miss Hanson came as Katherine Switzer (the first woman to run the Boson marathon) and Miss Hodgson came as the singer Prince. The Rainbows were really keen to learn about these inspirational figures and asked lots of questions to find out more. The were puzzled to hear that women were not always able to do the same things as men and said how unfair it was. We learnt lots of new words including "suffragette" "evacuee" "vaccine" and "medieval." We awarded two certificates, one for the best and most accurate costume, and one for the person who was most interesting to learn about and had the most interesting facts. Well done to one of our Emmeline Pankhurst's and also to one of our Neil Armstrong's! Here are some of our inspirational figures. See if you can guess who we are!

Team CH have begun learning about the significant individual William the Conqueror. They have looked at the chronology of events in 1066 and placed them in the correct order. They also generated some questions they would like to ask William the Conqueror if they met him.
Here is some of their work. The History Ambassadors have been interested to learn about the profile of history through school and how children's work, key vocabulary and facts are showcased within classrooms and other areas of school.
The ambassadors visited all the classrooms to look at the quality of history displays and how helpful they are to learning and what evidence of history work they show. They were surprised with the information and facts they found in classes as well as timelines being on display. They will meet again to discuss their findings and to see if there are any ways we can enhance our learning environment at Park Street. In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. At that time, white people and black people were kept apart in some American states this was known as segregation. Her actions lead to a bus boycott and eventual changing of the law so that people were no longer segregated. Now every year on 4th February we think about Rosa Parks and how she changed American history forever.
Team AC wanted to find out more about Rosa Parks. Through watching videos and reading information they discovered why she became known. They discussed what they had found out, then thought of questions they would like to ask Rosa. The children acted out the incident on the bus, freeze framing at different points to get reactions from the characters. Finally using ‘hot seating’, they asked Rosa questions about what she might have said and thought at that time. Over the past few weeks Team CW have been seeing how food changes over time. In separate sealed bags they placed a slice of bread that had been handled, a piece of bread straight from the packet, a strawberry, an apple core and a banana skin.
Over a few weeks the Rainbows used magnifying glasses to see how the food changed over time and discussed what they could see. There didn't seem to be much happening at the start, and the processes of change were very slow, then suddenly lots of changes seemed to come at once. Comments from the children included "It's gone furry," "The bread has got green, brown and yellow bits growing on it!" "The strawberry is brown and there is lots of juice coming out of it," "The strawberry has nearly disappeared!" and "the banana skin has gone brown and black!" The rainbows could see that the bread that was handled very little did not change much at all but went very hard. They knew that bacteria had grown and changed the food and it was dangerous to touch. Here are some photos of what happened. What a fantastic half term of learning they have had in the Shooting Stars! The children loved their "Magical Storyland" theme and have been so excited to learn about a new story each week.
Here is a photo of their Learning Journey display which showcases their learning over this half term. The children have been able to look back on this to re-cap their learning and recall what they found out previously, This will be added to their nursery floor book so the children can continue to re-visit it and talk about their past learning as they begin their new learning journey next half term. Team CW have revisited their learning throughout this half term. Their topic has been "Magical Storyland" and they have learnt about lots of different traditional tales and fairy stories.
Each day, the Rainbows recap their learning and talk about what knowledge they have learnt across the curriculum. They talk about work they have completed and recap key vocabulary and what these words means. The Rainbows love sharing their achievements and accomplishments with each other! They add their learning to their learning journey display and this helps them to revisit it throughout each day. Here are some of their achievements! Team EO and Team JF have been learning the key vocabulary to describe the features of a castle. They have labelled pictures and explained why castles have these features and how they can defend themselves.
In year 1 they have been learning that ‘chronological’ means putting events in order in which they occurred from first to last.
The children watched a short video to show how castles changed over time and then they created a timeline of castles and events. They discussed the materials that castles used to be made from, such as wooden motte and bailey castles, how wood easily sets on fire and that this was one of the factors why castles were later built from stone which helps to date them. The children looked at the years in which the castles were built to help put them in chronological order. Team JF have been learning why castles were built, the different types of castles and the benefits of each type of castle. They know that castles evolved from being made from wood to stone and the good and bad points of building each type.
