Team JF focused their learning on a current historical influence, Marcus Rashford. They initially discussed his upbringing through a story and the challenges he faced. They then focused on his achievements in football and went into talking around why he is a significant person. They then focused on the charity work he has completed, what he has done for children and how he influenced other well-known people to join him.
What an inspiration!

The Rainbows have a learning journey displayed in the classroom so they can recall and discuss the learning they have done that day, week or half term. The Rainbows are given the opportunity to discuss what they have learnt and recall key knowledge and vocabulary to help strengthen their knowledge, identify any areas where knowledge needs to be reinforced and so they can see how their learning has progressed over time.
There is also a timeline that is added to every week so children can see what they have learnt, and it encourages them to use vocabulary related to chrolonlogy, such as first, next, then, last, finally. Here is this half terms example. Next half term it will be updated with new learning and lots of opportunities to review and revisit key knowledge! This week the Rainbows have been learning about two very important people and have celebrated their achievements!
The first person they learnt about is Sir Lewis Hamilton. They know that Sir Lewis is a Formula 1 driver and has achieved lots of trophies. They know the Queen even knighted him because he has made such a positive impact in the sporting world. The Rainbows watched a video of Sir Lewis when he was just seven years old and was on Blue Peter racing his remote control car. They know he worked very hard, even when other children weren't very nice to him and he overcame all the difficulties to be an amazing F1 driver. They coloured in some pictures of Sir Lewis to help develop their motor skills. This years Black History month theme is "Saluting our Sisters" so Rainbows also learnt about Aretha Franklin, a very famous singer from Detroit. They know she worked so hard to be singer at her fathers church and everyone loved her voice. She travelled around different churches singing and eventually got a record contract and her songs are still listened to around the world. They learnt that it was hard for Aretha to sing where she wanted to, and to get a record contract. The Rainbows were proud that she entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame too! They listened to one of her songs called "Respect" and know that she wanted to be treated the same as everyone else which is why she sang the song. The Rainbows said they enjoyed celebrating the lives of Sir Lewis and Aretha Franklin. In Team EO they have a learning journey displayed so that they can recall and discuss their learning over the course of the half-term. At the end of each half-term the display is taken down and stuck into their learning journey floor book that is kept in the reading area so that children can continue to enjoy revisiting previous learning and strengthen their knowledge.
Here is their learning journey display for Autumn 1 on their 'Marvellous Me!' topic. Today was our history meeting with our history school governor Judy Milner. The meeting provided the opportunity for Mrs Milner and history leaders to work collaboratively to develop provision in each subject through working collaboratively on a subject development strategy document. Mrs Milner was informed about the status of history at the start of this academic year and then worked with subject leaders to develop an action and monitoring plan. Mrs Milner will be updated on progress against actions set throughout the year.
Subject leaders shared the starting position statement for history providing a status summary. They shared actions taken in the previous year, strengths and areas for development. The subject leaders and link governor added actions to the subject strategy document for 2023-24 after talking in length about the intent and implementation of history through school, from EYFS to Year 6. Our next meeting will be in the Spring Term. Team AC have been learning about Black History Month. The theme this year is "Salute our Sisters!"
Team AC learnt about Floella Benjamin who was born in Trinidad and moved to England when she was a child. They learnt about her life and when and where she was born, when she came to England and how she felt coming to a different country. Floella did experience adversity and Team AC were amazed at what she has achieved since moving to England. They looked at her achievements throughout her life and talked about why she is important to other people. What an amazing woman! As part of the Year 4 and Year 5 Geography topic, Teams JD, LF and DB visited the local area of Wombwell and linked it to their history topic.
By visiting Wombwell, the children had the chance to experience snapshots from the past, including the cemetery, shops, pubs, churches, memorials, housing, and other significant landmarks. The walk was self-guided, and they made sure to see as much of the village as we possibly could. They made note of the some of the dates on the buildings and we observed that the majority of the houses were terraced and some of them dated all the way back to 1895. The children also learnt that many homes would have once housed the miners from the area. The children were amazed at the historical aspects of the village as well as commenting on the art-deco window frames found on the older buildings in Wombwell. ![]() Team AC and Team SG have been introduced to their history focus for this term - Stone Age to Iron Age - technology and travel. We started by looking at what history actually is. We talked about what they already knew and understood about this subject and what they would like to find out. The children discussed how history linked to other areas of the curriculum and what they had studied in history previously. We introduced the word 'prehistory' and discussed what that meant. The children made a human timeline to show the relevant changes that occurred during this period in time. As a class we thought about how we can find out about the past if there are no written records from this time which lead us to look at the work of archeologists. The children had great fun being archeologists and doing their own 'dig' to find artefacts and evidence from the past. The children were then challenged to think about what each artefact was and what it could have been used for. We discussed the materials each object was made from and how this compared to the modern day. We also discovered that evidence could be found on the walls of caves - predominantly in countries like France and Spain and what these drawings told us about the lives of people at this time. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at how basic technological advances grew over time and how these changed the way people lived. We will also look at how climatic changes altered the shape of the land and how this also affected how people moved around and why they travelled from place to place. We are really enjoying our history focus work. Watch this space for more of what we have learnt! October is Black History Month and all classes in school will be learning about an influential person.
Park Street have enjoyed learning about footballer Laurie Cunnigham as part of our Black History Month Assembly work. The children have also enjoyed learning about the legend Bob Marley, learning his 'Three Little Birds' song! Keep checking the blog for more updates about who each class is studying! Nursery have been continuing to learn about the world around them. When they have a secure knowledge of themselves, their family, friends and community these become the building blocks for learning about life in the past.
This week Shooting Stars Marvellous Me theme has moved onto learning about their houses. Today they read an information book all about different types of houses around the world. Then the children had the chance to tell us about their house. Some parents had shared photos of their house on seesaw so the children enjoyed looking at these and talking about them at snack time. They learnt the word house, flat and bungalow and talked about bungalows not having an upstairs. In their provision so far they have been building houses using different construction materials and some children also made a house using the shapes in the creative area. |
