Team AC and Team SG have been introduced to their history focus for this term - Stone Age to Iron Age - technology and travel. We started by looking at what history actually is. We talked about what they already knew and understood about this subject and what they would like to find out. The children discussed how history linked to other areas of the curriculum and what they had studied in history previously. We introduced the word 'prehistory' and discussed what that meant. The children made a human timeline to show the relevant changes that occurred during this period in time. As a class we thought about how we can find out about the past if there are no written records from this time which lead us to look at the work of archeologists. The children had great fun being archeologists and doing their own 'dig' to find artefacts and evidence from the past. The children were then challenged to think about what each artefact was and what it could have been used for. We discussed the materials each object was made from and how this compared to the modern day. We also discovered that evidence could be found on the walls of caves - predominantly in countries like France and Spain and what these drawings told us about the lives of people at this time. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at how basic technological advances grew over time and how these changed the way people lived. We will also look at how climatic changes altered the shape of the land and how this also affected how people moved around and why they travelled from place to place. We are really enjoying our history focus work. Watch this space for more of what we have learnt!
