This week in maths Team JF have been busy consolidating their knowledge of multiplication and division. The children have used a range of exciting activities to ensure a deep understanding. For example, they started the week off by putting their problem solving skills to the test in order to solve a range of challenging 1 and 2 step questions. From this, they moved into creating their own multiplication game. This involved using digit cards and a dice to generate their own calculations for a partner to solve. The children were not only demonstrating amazing team working skills, they have once again proven themselves to be brilliant mathematicians. Keep up the great work!
Next week we will begin exploring money.
This week in literacy the children finished off and published their captivating adventure stories. The children have really enjoyed writing their versions of the Stone Age Boy and have taken great pride in their work. This was evident from their use of word mats in class, ensuring higher level vocabulary was used and checking spellings with a dictionary. As soon as the children were happy with their writing they created their own book cover and finished off the unit by reading their masterpiece to a younger child in school.
This was lovely to see and hear as both children took great pleasure from this experience and is something I hope to continue throughout the year.
What an amazing first week back! This week Team JF have traveled back in time using the story 'The Stone Age Boy'. After reading it, we decided to write our own versions using some of the ideas in the book. Our completed stories will then be shared with the younger children in school.
To ensure our versions are remarkable, we unpicked the story identifying the setting, build up, problem, resolution and ending. We then started exploring features of adventure stories and focused on practicing one of the writing skills each day.
This week in maths we started our new focus of formal division. The children were really excited to begin division and have shown great enthusiasm towards their learning. We started the unit off practically, using the place value counters to ensure children had a deep understanding of what division is. From this, we moved into the formal 'bus stop' method, dividing 2 digit by 1 digit numbers. They have really enjoyed this and even when presented with a challenge they have put in 100% effort.
This week we began our exciting new topic of 'Through the Ages.' Within this unit we will be exploring what life was like from the Stone Age through to the Romans.
To begin with we centered our learning around a timeline of Britain and discussed the different time periods including BC and AD. Our first session we focused on prehistoric Britain looking at artifacts and fossils from this time. As there are no written records, the children were really keen to know how we knew all of this information. This led us to explore archaeology. The children were given the task of becoming archaeologists to carefully dig for some artifacts from the past and as a team decide what it was and its purpose. The children really got into character and were fantastic at this, using every detail they could to judge what it was!
