Team CB have been working very hard in Geography this half term, and this week was no exception! The children have been looking closely at the physical geography of the rainforest. They have been discussing in detail, the different layers within the rainforest and what plants and animals can be located in each section. The children have found this aspect very fascinating, expecially discovering all about the layers of the rainforest and the various animals that can be found living in each layer!

Team EO were very excited to see it begin to snow this afternoon. They spent some time looking at the map of England and the weather forecast! The children were able to recognise the United Kingdom and England and they looked at towns and cities on the map that were close to where they are in Wombwell! The children went outside into their outdoor area and spent time exploring in the snow. They used brushes to mark make in the snow that had settled on one their mats, but it soon melted so they moved on to mark making on the tables. Some of the children made snowballs by sculpting the snow and by pressing and moulding it together, and practised our throwing skills, by carefully throwing them onto the grass away from others. They explored their footprints and watched as they caught it on their clothes and in their hair! Team EO had lots of fun! Today was a VERY windy day so the children in Team CW did some impromptu learning! They decided to make kites to see how they react to the wind and how they move. First, they decorated their kites, next they cut it out, then put some tape on it to strengthen it, used the hole punch to make a hole and finally tied some string to hold on to.
The children took their kites outside and watched them fly in the wind. They learnt that when the wind was stronger or when a gust came, their kites would get higher and fly further away from them. When the wind got weaker the kites floated nearer to them and towards the ground. The children had so much fun! Some of the children made dancing sticks with straws and tissue paper and watched how they changed in the wind, and some of them had a great idea to make some flags to fly! In Team CW, the children were also learning about Jack and the Beanstalk today. They talked about how windy it must be high in the sky as the clouds were moving very fast! The children decided that the beanstalk would be swaying lots and would be too dangerous for Jack to climb. They tried listening for the giants footsteps in the clouds but it was too windy to hear anything! Some of the comments were "It is getting darker and windier," "The clouds are silver," "It's too windy to hear the giants footsteps," "It's started to rain," "My kite was flying!" "My kite got stuck (in the climbing frame) 'cos its windy!" "The clouds were moving fast!" "The kite blew up!" and "The kite went high!" During Team EO's welly walk this week, the children pretended that they were Little Red Riding Hood and that they were walking through the woods to Grandma's house. They were tasked with making a map from Litlle Red Riding Hood's house to Grandma's home. The children worked in pairs to draw their maps and thought carefully about what things they may have passed on their way to Grandma's house and included these on their maps.
At the beginning of the spring term, the children in AC began their new topic, 'How does where we live compare to South America?'. The children have been looking at the place where they live, the town that they live in, what is a city, the county in which they live, the country, and the continent.
In Team CW, the children have been making the most of the icy weather. With the temperature dropping, the children have experienced how the cold temperatures have affected the water in their outside learning area. The had noticed how the water troughs had frozen during the night and were now ice! They had so much fun exploring what the ice felt like. Here are some of their comments:
"Its cold," "Its slippy," "Water is ice," "Its icy," "You put water on it to melt it," "The water freezes with ice on top," "Its hard and you can cut your hand." This week Team CB have been on a walk through Wombwell as part of their geography focus. As they are comparing Wombwell to Brazil, the children explored their local area, looking at the human and physical geography features that could be seen. They discussed the history of the town and how it had changed over time. The class were fantastic at spotting local features and discussing elements of the town that they did not know about. This will help the class tremendously in the coming weeks as they look to learn more about how two places in the world compare.
Throughout school, the Geogers of Park Street have been very busy during the first term of the school year. Up and down the main school street there is evidence of everyone's hard work and their learning. Take a look at the wonderful displays that adorn the walls. A huge congratulations to you all.
Our amazing Year 6 Geogers have been developing their knowledge and understanding of their locality and the wider world and continents. During the entire Autumn term, Park Street Year 6 Geogers, have been studying in detail , the location of the English capital city, London, their own county, South Yorkshire, and their home town, Barnsley. In doing so, they have been using their excellent map skills, using digital maps, maps and atlases, enabling them to recognise the distinct characteristics of these regions and how these have changed over time. The children are also beginning to develop an understanding of the broad land-use patterns of the UK and identifying that there are areas of agriculture, urban settlement and service industry developments, in particular, to their own locality. Through the use of maps, digital maps and atlases, our Year 6's have been able to locate countries and regions of the Pacific Ring. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world's mountain ranges and discovering all about the world's most famous volcanoes. They were amazed at how different factors beneath the Earth's surface, as well the location of the volcanoes themselves, can cause the most vicious eruptions! Let's get ready to rumble! The Year 6 Geogers, through looking at maps and the location of tectonic plates, began to recognise how the movement of these can cause Earthquakes. They were highly fascinated to learn about the Ring of Fire or the Pacific Ring, where this is found in the world and how many natural disasters can occur there. Further to their study, the children have been developing an understanding about the various natural disasters that occur around the world; from floods to blizzrds, to the consequences of tornadoes and hurricanes. The children voyaged over different continents, experiencing the physical effects of these extreme weather conditions to their locations, aloowing them to plan their own travel to none other than Japan!! In doing so, Year 6 are showing maturity and how they themselves are preparing for the wider world. |
