Autumn Reading in Team CT

​During this term, the class in Team CT have been working really hard on a series of non-fiction texts. These texts covered a range of content, including texts linked to healthy eating and active life styles, as well as texts linked to different countries within the UK (this linked to the class’ current Geography unit). The texts provided the class with great reference points to answer questions linked to vocabulary and retrieval. Towards the end of the half term, the class worked on beginning to sequence events from the text they had been reading.

Autumn Reading in Team AF

​In Team AF the class have been working incredibly hard this half term to develop their understanding of phonics as we have been following the Read Write Inc approach. The class have worked really hard to develop their understanding and recall of Set 2 sounds. During story time, the class have been reading The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. This is the class’ chosen author to study this year. Through reading the Gruffalo the class have gained an understanding of different settings. This supported the class in developing their description skills in order to develop their writing further.

Autumn Reading in Team JF

In reading during the Autumn Term, Team JF have been reading the book The Great Chocoplot. The children have really enjoyed reading this book as it was full of witty lines and lots of sarcasm, which led to many class discussions around how this is portrayed within texts, before the class generated their own examples. The book not only gave the class great talking points with the vocabulary used, but also allowed them to draw on and develop their inferencing skills when discussing the characters Jelly, Gari and Mrs Bunstable.

Autumn Reading in Team LL

During the Autumn Term, Team LL have based much of their reading work on their class novel Stormbreaker. They have focused on and developed each of the VIPER skills, first discretely, then with variation. They looked at summarising key events from longer passages of text and presenting findings concisely. The class explored how Anthony Horowitz developed character and plot and worked on refining their inference and explanation skills.

Autumn Reading in Team GG

During the Autumn term, the children in Team GG have been exposed to a range of short non fiction texts to develop their vocabulary linked to both their Science and Geography topics.  During each session, the children have had opportunities to Think, Pair, Share what they have found out from each paragraph. They also developed their confidence to use the dictionary to locate the correct definition for the subject specific words.  For some of the sessions, the children have enjoyed reading the first part of the fictional text Tilly the Time Machine and The Twits by Roald Dahl.  They were able to make inference linked to the actions of the characters in the text as well as explore how the author has built the vivid image of the settings through the choice of language.

Autumn Reading in Team CC

During the Autumn term, Team CC have been working on the topics Marvellous Me and Sparkle and Shine! They have read lots of books and based their learning on them including Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs, Funny Bones and The Rainbow Fish. The class have been following the Read Write Inc scheme and Fred Frog has been helping the children to learn new sounds! He has been teaching them to Fred Talk so they can read and write. The class have also been developing their reading area. The children discussed what they would like it to look like and what books they would like to read. The class wanted a reading tent where they could sit quietly and read.
