This week Team CH have been learning about chronology.
They have constructed a timeline of events that detail the order of things that happened before and during the Great Fire of London. They have been able to talk through this with their partner and include key topic vocabulary, give reasons and discuss the evidence that shows this happened.

Wow! Where do we start with Team JD's amazing WW1 day! They had such an amazing time and would really like to thank Mr Fidment for such a passionate, fun, hands on and down right dirty experience.
As you can see from the photos, they had the best time and had such big smiles (and lots of dirt) on our faces! The children really felt like were soldiers and got stuck in with all the activities set for them! Working as a team and creating such memories! Making the dens and working together really gave us a sense of confidence, patience and problem solving! This week Team CH have been learning about some of the different jobs that people had in 1666. They had the opportunity to talk about each job and time to think about if it is or was a job they would like to have.
Jobs in the 17th century they learnt about included; Chimney sweeps Blacksmiths Rat catchers Gong farmers (one of the smelliest jobs!) Musicians Cooks Some of the children were a little upset to learn that they couldn’t be fire fighters as there was no organised fire brigade in 1666! In History, Team EO learnt that the year 1666 was over 350 years ago and they know that this is the year that the Great Fire of London broke out. They looked at photographs of modern London and with their talk partners they discussed what they could see including; houses, buildings, transport and people. Next, they thought about why they don’t have photos of what London was like in 1666 (17th century) and discovered that this was because cameras had not been invented! For their main task, they worked as a group to sort picture of past and present London. Team EO discussed how the buildings were different in the past and how the people travelled differently.
In team JD this term they are learning about World War One. This week they identified the countries and their roles at the start of World War One.
They looked at the dates, the alliances and the triple Entente. Their work shows their map skills and also details the key knowledge and vocabulary they will be learning and using over the next few weeks. The children are excited for their WW1 day on Monday 5th February. Today Miss Clementson led a whole school history assembly and spoke about the importance of history and why we need to understand history to help us navigate our future.
Miss Clementson shared different types of evidence that we could use to learn about the past and brought in some items to show. The items in question were an iron from the early 1900's, a vintage tin opener from WW1, a cassette tape and a CD. The children were very good at guessing what the items were, what materials they were made out of and how they worked. They did need reassuring that the CD and cassette tape were from very recent history though! The Spring focus in Team JD is Ancient Greek pottery.
During the last two weeks Team JD have investigated the patterns found on the pots and vases. They have recreated the geometric patterns and have applied them onto a Greek vase design. During this term they are going to create their very own Greek Vase, using recycling materials and Mod rock! They can't wait to keep us up to date with their designs! This week in Team CH they travelled back in time to the year 1666. They looked closely at present day London and highlighted some things they found interesting such as the bright lights, cars, buses, planes, helicopters, brick buildings and the Tube.
They questioned why they couldn’t compare these pictures of present-day London, to the London of the 17th century and that is because there was no way of capturing images of London in 1666 as cameras were not invented until 1816. Additionally, they looked very closely at present day London at night and thought hard about what London in the 17th century would look like at night and more specifically how people would move around, see in the dark and build their homes. Finally, they completed a task to help visualise the similarities and difference of present-day London and London of the past. This half term has been a very busy few weeks and the Rainbows have achieved so much. Their topic has been Colour and Light and each week they have focused on a different learning area. There have been special learning days including Road Safety week and Antibullying week and they have enjoyed their Christmas craft afternoon, Christmas party and their AMAZING Nativity performance!
Their learning journey is shown below and every week they add examples of the children's learning and review key knowledge and vocabulary as a team. This not only helps strengthen their knowledge but helps them develop chronology and see changes over time, including new things they have learnt and how they have progressed onto learning new skills. Have a look below at all their fabulous learning! Although the majority of history learning will take place in the Spring Term when year 6 explore what life was like in Ancient Egypt, they have covered lots this term too. They have learnt about the work of significant figures in history such as Ben Franklin who researched the link between electrical charge and lightning. They have also looked at historical sources such as translations of diaries and letters, artefacts from archaeological digs to piece together the events surrounding the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE and the impact on the people of Pompeii.
