In phonics and literacy Team CW have been learning and securing their knowledge of Set 1 sounds from Read Write Inc. They can segment these sounds and read them in words. The class have been practising “Fred in Your Head” faster and are learning to read words on sight rather than segmenting each sound first. Some of the class have begun reading short sentences and reading tricky red words within them. The team have been answering simple questions about what they have read as well. Team CW's topic last half term was “Magical Storyland” and the core book was “The Three Little Pigs.” The class focused on learning key vocabulary from the story first including “howled,” “trembled” “clattered,” “plodded” and “bellowed.” They could join in with key phrases from the story and by the end of the topic could retell the story in detail to friends. The class also had Bedtime Story Day last half term. Rainbows love reading and this was another opportunity to share their love of books. The class dressed in pyjamas and brought their favourite book to school. They shared their book with friends and told them why they love it so much, which character is their favourite, what happens in the story and what their favourite part is. Different adults from school dropped into the classroom throughout the day to share their favourite story with the children and they listened to some new ones they had never read before. Reception even got to snuggle up with a story and have a hot chocolate! It was an amazing day! Rainbows are also enjoying the reading workshop every week where parents are invited into school to read with children at the end of the day. Some of the Rainbows have won a story to take home with them from the raffle draw. Finally, Team CW are also working hard at Talk Through Stories which helps them get to know a story really well including the characters and plot. It is helping them develop their vocabulary so they can understand and use these words themselves.
