Maths
We have continued with the column subtraction method this week, including subtracting across zeros. We discussed how this relates to real life contexts, for example working out the change we would receive from a bill. Towards the end of the week we also started to look at two step problems and how we can work out what we are expected to do based on the language used within the question. Literacy During our lessons this week we have focused on two SPAG elements: expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbial phrases. We discussed their importance in our writing and in relation to the end of Year 5 expectations. Yesterday, we watched a video click about how Bram Stoker got his inspiration from Whitby to write chapters 6, 7 and 8 of his book 'Dracula'. Together, we then created a paragraph for a setting in Whitby, which included two examples of expanded noun phrases and two examples of fronted adverbial phrases.

Throughout our lessons this week we have looked at using the column subtraction method to solve written calculations. We started working on calculations that had the same amount of digits before looking at calculations that have a differing number of digits and then finally, we looked at calculations including decimals. Towards the end of the week, we have also completed our weekly mental arithmetic paper. Literacy In our literacy lessons we have focused on recount writing. Recounts are a way of retelling an important event or describing an experience that you have had to others, such as a school trip or a funny story. When writing our own recounts about our trip to Whitby, we have worked on making sure the following are included:
Wednesday 4th October
All children are to arrive at school on Wednesday (5th October) morning for 8:30am. At this time, children and parents will be allowed into the hall with luggage. Can children then make their way to Team LG's classroom to be registered? Once we have registered, we will make our way down to the coach for a 9:00am set off. Parents are very welcome to stay and wave their children off.
Maths
Continuing with our unit on Place Value, this week we focused on counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10. We quickly recognised a pattern to this and we even recognised what happened when the answer bridged 10. Towards the end of the week we brought our learning to a close and completed our first 'Kahoot!' based on our maths lessons over the past four weeks. Literacy This week in Literacy, we created letters in response to Chloe's problems. This meant that we were writing a letter back to Chloe from the perspective of the agony aunt. We had to ensure that the advice we were giving was realistic and concise, to make sure that we were following the features of a short letter. |
