Maths
We began the week by focusing on the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. To begin with, we did this using concrete materials (square tiles), before applying this to abstract questions. We had to use our knowledge in relation to the properties of rectangles and squares in order to find the length of the missing sides on some of the shapes. We then revisited the written method for dividing by a single digit number and then applied this to word problems. We discussed the language used in worded questions and what this means. The questions required us to use our knowledge of other areas of maths including conversion and money and apply this to division,

Literacy
Following on from a reading comprehension paper about underage soldiers fighting in WW1, we discussed the opinions that different people may have about this topic (parents, siblings, the government etc). We also continued to look at features of newspapers and finished an article by writing in the missing feature: headline, 5W introduction and captions. Next week, we will be writing our own newspaper articles about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of the war.

Maths
We had a look at the short written method for division  -  the bus stop method. We used manipulatives to demonstrate how the method works, particularly focusing on when a digit has to be exchanged. Afterwards, we started to use the written method in an abstract form and learnt to carry our calculation into decimal places instead of leaving our answer with a remainder and before long we were looking at problems including missing digits.

Maths

Throughout the week, we revisited the written method for long multiplication. We briefly touched on this before the Christmas holiday however we weren't  consistent enough in using the method accurately. After working on the method for another week and beginning to apply it to reasoning problems, we are a lot more confident in answering long multiplication questions and understanding how the process works.

Literacy

The start of a new term meant the start of a new book - Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. Set in World War One, the book reflects on a young boy's life from the trenches. We were taken back to Tommo's first day at school and analysed his feelings towards this using Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE). As we continued to read we discussed the pressures that some families faced when the First World War was taking place and how they had to adhere to the rules set by the Colonel. Alongside this, we also analysed the features of a newspaper report and looked at two examples of reports from newspapers written in 1914.
