Hello and welcome back! I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and a very Happy New Year. It was lovely to see the children this week after the holidays and hear all their stories from their two weeks off. I am pleased to say how brilliant it was to get straight back into teaching and learning and how amazed I am at the children's efforts this week,
Maths We began the week looking at fact families for multiplication and division and soon came to realise that there are eight different facts we can find from three numbers. Following on from this we had a look at the short written method for division - the bus stop method. After a quick recap we started to carry our calculation into decimal places instead of leaving our answer with a remainder and before long we were looking at problems including missing digits. Literacy The start of a new term meant the start of a new book - Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. Set in World War One, the book reflects on a young boy's life from the trenches. We were taken back to Tommo's first day at school and analysed his feelings towards this using Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE). As we continued to read we discussed the pressures that some families faced when the First World War was taking place and how they had to adhere to the rules set by the Colonel. Alongside this, we also analysed the features of a newspaper report and looked at two examples of reports from newspapers written in 1914.
