During the morning of Monday 6th February the children in Team LG discovered the lives and stories of local people involved in WW1 using archival documents, handling objects and period costume. The children had a hands on experience with artefacts and learnt about the life of a soldier through role-play. The day ended with a reflective creative writing activity where pupils transported themselves back in time and wrote a postcard to a soldier or nurse. The following afternoon Team LG thoroughly enjoyed a WW1 Boot Camp, learning how to march, avoiding the enemy in the nature reserve, building shelters, trying out basic first aid – THE WORKS! Team LG were then lucky enough to be taken on the Wombwell Memorial Train on the Wednesday afternoon. This gave the children an increased understanding and appreciation of the effects of WW1 on the local community. Members of the local Heritage Group volunteered to accompany us on the trail through Wombwell and provide us with factual information about the creation of the archives and their relevance.
