Maths
This week we have consolidated our knowledge of perimeter, and also used our knowledge of shapes to calculate the perimeter of shapes with missing lengths. We have then progressed onto finding the area of rectangles and will be furthering this next week by finding the area of compound rectilinear shapes. Literacy During our writing lessons, we have planned and started to write our diary entries (from the perspective of a coal miner). Some children have chosen to write using the Barnsley dialect, which has added real twist to their work. Mrs Firth, who isn't from Barnsley, has had great difficulty at times understanding the slang used within our work.

Maths
This week we started work on perimeter. We began by calculating the perimeter of rectangles before moving onto compound rectilinear shapes. As a challenge, we looked at calculating the perimeter of shapes where some of the sides had missing lengths. We found it quite complicated so it is something that we will continue working on, Literacy We have completed writing our newspaper articles and edited them early on this week. For the publishing process, we wanted to make sure our reports looked like the articles you would see in a newspaper. Therefore, we used the computer suite to type our articles and added other features such as headlines, pictures and captions. On Monday afternoon, Team LF will be completing their Wombwell walk (weather permitting). Children will need appropriate footwear and a warm coat.
Thank you. Maths
This week we have focussed on the written method for column subtraction. We began by subtracting two numbers with the same amount of digits, before subtracting two numbers with a different amount of digits and decimals. We have applied our knowledge to reasoning questions such as explaining the mistakes of others and identifying missing digits. Literacy We have continued to read Dracula this week and have focussed on our fluency by reading the same piece of text for several days. We have worked on the vocabulary within the text and our retrieval skills, using the scanning technique to find our answers. Within our writing lessons, we have unpicked the features of newspaper reports and begun to work on the specific features used within this genre of text, such as the use of brackets for parenthesis. Over the past couple of weeks we have worked on addition skills, first beginning with fact families and then building up to the column method and the application of reasoning. Literacy We have focussed on writing a piece of atmospheric writing, including taught SPaG elements such as expanded noun phrases, imagery and tension. We have been absolutely blown away by the imagination that has gone into the children's writing and cannot wait to show Miss Baxter (Literacy Lead) the final pieces. Pattern seeking in science involves children making observations or taking measurements to explore situations where a variable cannot be easily controlled. It often includes and is centred on a ‘big question’ for children to investigate. Our big question in Team LF was, ‘How does the planets distance from the sun affect its temperature?’ To conduct our research, we used the internet to find out the distance of each planet from the sun and each planet's temperature. We used our findings to draw the conclusion that as the distance from the sun increases, the temperature of the planets decreases. We also spotted an anomaly because we noticed that Venus did not fit the pattern. Venus has the highest temperature even though it is the second planet from the sun. Some of the children even explained why this was in their explanations below. Maths
This week we have understanding and using negative numbers in context, as well as Roman numerals to 1,000. It's taken a little while to get our heads around understanding the Roman numeral system, however after a bit of time I think we'd be able to survive in the Roman era. Literacy During our lessons this week, we watched a video hook based on 'Dracula's Whitby'. We have started to analyse the features of atmospheric writing in preparation for when we create out own piece of work. Today (7th October) we have participated in National Poetry Day and have created acrostic poems based on Convict's Tunnel. We have been blown away by the language and ideas and will definitely find it difficult to choose which to display. Great effort Team LF! Maths
We are in full flow with our tables races this week - week 2 already! The children's scores are improving on a daily basis and we are so proud. In our Place Value unit we have continued to work on reading and writing numbers, and comparing and ordering numbers up to 1,000,000. Literacy We are currently working on 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, focussing on vocabulary and retrieval. In our writing lessons, we have been working on the individual features of ghost stories, including adverbial phrases and suspense, in preparation for using these within our own writing. During our Science lesson today, we have made our very own periscopes to understand how light is reflected. We used cereal boxes and mirrors to create our periscope and tested our creations out around the classroom.
